@montagsoup I don't think that should be a problem. I mostly mean, like, you'd just get an stl and it would kinda amplify all the imperfections. That's the kind of noise I mean, not scanning artifacts.
You can use a spray on clay, but I think the surface should scan in okay. Use like a powder, dry shampoo spray, or metrology spray.
@montagsoup yeah. There's some tools like haptic gloves that might help.
The downside of a clay first situation is noise reduction upon getting scanned in and a loss of hierarchical geometry data that comes from the cad construction process.
It'd be really rad to see improvements on this stuff, though. There do exist 3d scanners for help with this, but it's not perfect.

a few years ago, i started thinking "you know, it would be pretty cool if somebody took seriously the idea that G-d has no gender and came up with a third-gender system in Hebrew and used it to make a de-gendered siddur. i would love to see what that looks like"
and then i was introduced to the Nonbinary Hebrew Project and i was like "wow! i hope somebody uses this to make a siddur! that would be really neat!"
and then i was like "...oh, i'm somebody, huh"
