Extended Thoughts On Monster Hunter World
as of last night, I completed the base story of Monster Hunter World, marking the second game in the series that I have hit credits on (the first being Portable 3rd)
obviously we are nowhere near done yet. I don't own Iceborne but I basically hard focused on key quests only near the end, leaving 80% of high rank uncompleted.
As for what I think of World having come from the classic games:
shit its aight but its got some issues for sure. the weapon designs dont differ much from each other and there dont seem to be very many if any wacked out designs like the chainsaw long sword from P3rd, which hurts a little because half the time i play MH im trying to craft some type of gear or play dress up with armor. the new monsters feel very hit or miss with some cool designs but some felt strangely lacking in attacks, like Val Hazaak. The endgame difficulty spike with back to back Elder Dragons hit me like a brick wall, which im not sure is due to skipping most of high rank or not.
The maps feel overly large but they are quite pretty, and their size is probably what made the scoutflies exist. maybe this was just a technical limitation in older games and they always wanted them big, but it feels a little too big.
The story didnt really hook me too much until the end parts but i wont go into spoilers here.
poogie is as cute as ever though 🐷 and speaking of pets I do like how the game lets you let creatures you catch loose into your home. I let a horseshoe crab shaped guy chill in my house and god i love horseshoe crabs.
the combat and movement is certainly more fluid which took some adjusting. some say the classic combat is "clunky" but I find both systems to be relatively smooth. I dislike the removal of the melee attack on the bow which made it only an option for jump attacks/mounts, as i used that in classic games to get rid of mook-level stuff without wasting time lining up a shot or wasting coatings. I also dislike the removal of the shot types to instead have them as special attacks, which made the bows all feel more samey to me. long sword got a bunch of new moves which felt a little overwhelming at first but i figured out how to work them into combos. I wonder what made them decide using potions or rations was no longer a commitment. I am ambivalent about this change. same with having access to your whole item box mid quest from the camps, which is a strange idea since it kinda nullifies the item carry limits that made resources more valuable in older games i think.
also the journal ingame inspired me to make my own irl monster info pages on paper.
tldr: I think World is an ok game but some aspects i didnt like or made me tilt my head. i dont outright hate it but i see why some do.
no matter how lorge you think a bumblebee would be, i guarantee its gonna be bigger in person
l.p meta, passing the hat around
Friends, it has become financially unreasonable for me to keep hosting l.p where it currently is, and we're looking to pitch out tent with Fedihost. One caveat: we need $500 to cover Fedihost's migration fees (that sum would cover l.p's hosting fees for a few months at least by my count).
If you have some loose change in need of a home and want to support what we do here at laserdisc dot party, you will have my eternal thanks. https://ko-fi.com/derekgodin/goal?g=0
