I was always taught in school that books must have protagonists and antagonists, and it occurs to me that this is a very hierarchical belief that just isn't true.

Like the Bunker series by Jordan Rivet for example, which involves plenty of conflict - but which frequently switches perspectives between the *parties* to that conflict. None of the parties is actually an antagonist!

I miss wired headphones where you plug a thing in and it immediately works 100% of the time without having to click on anything or charge anything or wait for anything or sync anything or make sure you don't connect to too many things or walk too far away by accident or

ChatGPT kent het concept “waarheid” niet. ChatGPT controleert niet of zijn output “klopt”. ChatGPT weet niet wat “klopt” is. Soms passen de ontwikkelaars handmatig iets aan als een levend persoon onterecht als pedofiel werd aangemerkt of zo. Maar dat is handmatig - je kunt dit niet voor alle gevallen oplossen door de techniek beter te maken, want ChatGPT kent het concept “waarheid” niet. Zo is ‘ie niet gebouwd.

Is dit bedoeld als anti-chatgpt? Nee. Ik wil er best voor uitkomen: ik ben met kopjes gooiend woest over het bestaan van ChatGPT en z’n vrienden, die ons water opslurpen, meer stroom verbruiken dan sommige natiestaten, bijna alles wat ze als bron gebruiken hebben gestolen, en lappen tekst produceren zonder waarheidswaarde die het hele internet beginnen te vervuilen. Maar het gaat me hier om wat ze zijn, wat ze doen. Zodat als je ervoor kiest ze te gebruiken je weet wat je krijgt.

ChatGPT doet niets met het concept waarheid. Waarheid is geen variabele in het algoritme. ChatGPT geeft altijd antwoord en zegt nooit “dat weet ik niet”, want ChatGPT weet sowieso helemaal niets. Behalve welke soorten woorden vaak samen voorkomen.

“Anna woont in Haarlem” en “Anna is tot ons verdriet vorige week overleden” zijn allebei combinaties die heel plausibel zijn en als je ChatGPT de ‘goede’ vragen stelt zal je dat terugkrijgen. Is allebei niet waar.

Als je ChatGPT een vraag stelt geeft het woorden terug die vaak op een bepaalde volgorde langskwamen in de stukken die het heeft gelezen. Het doel van ChatGPT is een antwoord genereren dat plausibel overkomt. Dat zo veel mogelijk LIJKT op de werkelijkheid.

Soms komt dat antwoord overeen met de werkelijkheid. Of dat ook zo is moet je zelf controleren. ChatGPT doet dat niet want daar is het niet voor gemaakt. Het genereert alleen overtuigende tekst.

En op nog veel lager niveau: “na ‘is’ komt vaak ‘het’ en na ‘het’ komt vaak ‘een’ en na “loopt’ komt vaak ‘naar’ enzovoort enzovoort.

Vervolgens gaat hier een hoeveelheid rekenwerk overheen waar wij ons niets bij voor kunnen stellen. En omdat wij ons er niets bij voor kunnen stellen gebeurt er vervolgens iets waar we van in de war raken.

ChatGPT heeft het hele internet gelezen en is toen conclusies gaan trekken. Zoals: oh, als mensen “recept” zeggen zeggen ze ook vaak “pan”. Als mensen “Amsterdam” zeggen zeggen ze “Anne Frank” en “Rijksmuseum” en “Halsema is een hoer” en “Dit mag je niet missen” en “tram”.

ChatGPT (en andere generatieve AI) is geen zoekmachine. Het is niet een vriendelijk schilletje over Google heen. Het is iets *fundamenteel* anders.

Bij iemand in mijn vlees-en-bloed omgeving bleek nogal een misverstand te bestaan waar we tijdens een gesprek terloops achterkwamen. Op Mastodon wordt het ook wel eens genoemd dus ik dacht, laat ik het hier ook even uitleggen.

as someone who spends a lot of time online in leftist circles i keep often seeing people be openly misanthropic and doomerist about other people and humanity in general, and all i want to say is that you cannot in good conscience be an anarchist and communist without believing that people deserve a chance or have potential to do good, even if it is often left untapped. i am going to drop a hot take here and say that misanthropy is never a condemnation of all people as a whole, no matter what people say. it's always about the condemnation of the other. it's all the other people who are ignorant and selfish and murderous, not you. they're all walking in circles but you "know the way". it's a hierarchy, it's antithetical to equality and freedom.

and when you start believing that capitalism or climate change are happening because "humans are the virus" or "naturally selfish and bad" or whatever, you don't end up with a revolution. you end up with a crusade. you end up with a gulag and the thoughts that my friend just burped out without any reflection on themselves. because the entire premise of there being "essentially irredeemable people" is what leads to this. We *all* want to choose where we live, where we work, who we live with.
We can *all* imagine finding a job or a school that we'd do great at - and moving to get to it.
We can *all* imagine meeting someone, falling in love and moving to be with them.
We can all imagine visiting somewhere and feeling so at home there that we plan to move there.

We can *all* see how live-changing it could be to move home - and how awful it would be to be prevented from moving.

It's always tempting to counter anti-immigrant discourse by pointing out how much value migrants contribute to their new country, what "we" gain from having migrants in "our" communities... And I think we should resist the temptation to make arguments from this basis.
