If any Mastodon instances are having trouble with their costs growing out of control, ping me and see if I can help lower your bill.
Apparently a recently closed instance was paying $300/month for hosting which is insane to read considering how small of an instance it was. When we had 40k monthly users I was paying about $120/month so an instance with less than 400 total users (not MAU) should be super cheap to run even with a few TB of storage and bandwidth.
It hurts my heart to read instances closing down over costs and finding out they’re paying more than instances 10x their size. 😢

English is better at accurate technical descriptions (not just for computers) but Dutch is a lot more emotionally expressive, and I prefer using a mix of both depending on the context
Like, come on. If you're going to claim to be a threat detection company or somesuch, preventing false positives is *also* part of your job!
Another day, another "beware of North Korean workers" article that has a list of identification factors that strongly overlaps with "how autistic folks do work" but no guidance whatsoever on how to prevent false positives

Another PSA to anyone following me from Fosstodon
In light of a new admin likely taking over, I will still be blocking the instance by the end of May.
I haven't seen much from the new admin, but they said they want to keep things "as is". That was the entire issue with the previous admin team. Another person doing the same old, same old, makes no difference.
People of Fosstodon: please find a place with decent moderators.
I know you all want to avoid drama - so do I! The way to do that is to take action when shit hits the fan, rather than turning the fan away so the shit hits someone else.
Was playing X4 Foundations, set ship to autopilot, it steers and faceplants directly into an asteroid... and immediately plays a voice line of the ship computer saying "Autopilot epically failed."

concept: Race the Supercomputer.
pick out a selection of notable supercomputers throughout history. rather than use benchmarks like instructions per second or Dhrystones or Whetstones:
- identify the tasks for which each computer was used;
- make programs for modern computers optimized to do the same tasks; and
- compare performance at those tasks.
so, for example: how much faster can your cell phone search for Mersenne primes than the Manchester Mk. 1? how much faster can your laptop calculate Japanese climatological and meteorological data than the Cray 1? how much faster can your graphics card render a planetarium-like video than the LINKS-1 system from Osaka University?
it would be a ton of work for very little benefit - especially given how many of these systems were used for proprietary or classified applications that we have little info about - but I think it would be really fun.

I want to give you my money. But if I can't download the book for which I have paid and move it to my eReader (Amazon has now blocked this), then I can't read your book, so I can't buy your book.
Strong preference for a paid ePub without DRM your own store, but the Kobo store would be fine too.
