people don't understand the phrase "sunlight is the best disinfectant" but they use it all the time. the average liberal thinks 'well if we give this man a stage to say his stuff, people will realise it's silly' but no, they want the stage to sell the already marketable version. they've already disinfected it so all you're doing is spreading propaganda. the shit you need to put in the sunlight is the stuff they *don't* want you to see. that's the only time it works, if it works at all.
Which of the following is / are more useful / accessible for a downloadable report or long read document?
Feel free to give me reasons. I am especially interested if you have sight issues from the mild to more severe.
The post about using Linux while blind (https://fireborn.mataroa.blog/blog/i-want-to-love-linux-it-doesnt-love-me-back-post-1-built-for-control-but-not-for-people/) contains a sentence that really stood out to me as being true in so many aspects of my life.
"We’re not waiting on unknowns.
We’re waiting on maintenance."
There's so much interest in "innovation." Anything can be fixed with apps, AI, wearables. Right?
But when I've asked blind people what makes it hard for them to walk in their neighborhoods, it's broken pavements and overhanging greenery. Councils can't afford maintenance.
@dmitry I remember someone about my age (40s) saying that when we were younger we looked forward to software updates - there really were exciting new features and cool graphics and stuff! - and now we're just like oh no, how can I turn it off, how much is it going to cost, what does it break... And lately, how are they trying to push me to use LLMs in 20 more ways.
Fascist propaganda
If you encounter a fascist sticker, a swastika graffito or a slogan in the wild, do not take photos and spread them around
Take proper precautions, peel off the sticker, paint over the graffito, or report the damage to the property owner
Make the propaganda disappear
Do not spread fascist propaganda
Fascist propaganda, caps
By the way, I'm only boosting this today because people LOVE spreading the images of Elon Musk doing the nazi salute everywhere.
An image of a rich and powerful man doing a nazi salute is fascist propaganda.
‘There are broadly two categories of power: power over (distributive power) and power with (collective power). We tend to understand power as only power over as that’s the one that most affects us. But activism is about the recognition and consolidation of collective power.’

Gern weiter Teilen.

this is the order of things that should come to mind when you think of "Amazon" imo
1. One of the world's most biodiverse forests, partly engineered by the indigenous population to be a large-scale experiment in agroforestry from the species distribution down to the soil, full of amazing fun people too
2. The world's biggest river, located in said forest
3. Mythological Greek women warriors, said to have inspired the Euro name of the jungle due to reports of indigenous female fighters, thought to be tall tales but now increasingly plausible to have been historical
4. Metaphorically, the idea of women warriors in general
5. The colour #3B7A57
...
10. some gringo corporation
“No computers.” the guard said harshly, holding out a metal box.
I put my phone in the box. He didn’t budge. I took off my smart watch and added it in.
“Are you sure you have no more computers? The detector sends out a brief EMP. It would be a shame to destroy any gadgets. Or injure you." He was staring at the side of my face.
Ah. I removed the Connex from my temple. I’d forgotten it was there.
He ushered me into what looked like an old electronic doorway, then pressed a button. A light flashed.
"You're free to enter. Enjoy." No smile.
I passed through a corridor to desk where a receptionist smiled. "First time?"
"Yes, is it obvious?"
"Don't worry. It's simple. Through the double doors there you'll find the main selection of books, by era and topic. It's colour-coded and easy to follow. You'll need these if you want to touch anything." She put a paper mask and thin laboratory gloves on the desk.
"Behind you is the iffy section, as we call it. Books printed after 2015."
"2015?! I thought AI printed books only appeared in the mid 2020s."
"That's probably true, but we can't be sure. Preserving authentic pre-AI knowledge is our raison d'être. We can't be too safe."
Her look turned serious and I saw the devotion to the cause in her eyes. Since the Big Corruption of '32, no digital files could be trusted to replicate original human knowledge. This library was a time capsule.
"Can books be taken out?"
"No, I'm afraid not. We couldn't let them back in, as they could be fakes."
"So, can I copy things? My phone and Connex were taken away. Do you have a camera to message me chapters?"
"No, we're strictly machine-free. but we have several scribes. They're very good." She was enjoying my puzzled look.
"They can copy down whole pages for you. With pen and paper," she answered my unspoken question.
"Pen and paper?" these were words of tales and myths.
"Come, I'll show."

So, blind people that care about their privacy and security are basically fucked. Either:
1. They buy an Apple computer (accessibility is very good, and a good screen reader)
2. They buy a Windows computer and need to buy a license for Jaws screen reader (if they can't work with NVDA or Windows Narrator).
It is fucking ableism. Fucking privilige. And I hate it.

Wow.
An excellent post from a blind screen reader user, on how bad accessibility is on Linux.
It is a fucking shame. And it is pure neglect, as pointed out in the blog post.
Hot take: a new version of open source software should not release before accessibility is fixed. It should be treated as a show stopper, because it actually is for people with a disability.

Technical debt collector and general hype-hater. Early 30s, non-binary, ND, poly, relationship anarchist, generally queer.
Sometimes horny on main (behind CW), very much into kink (bondage, freeuse, CNC, and other stuff), and believe it or not, very much a submissive bottom :p
Feel free to flirt, but if you want to actually meet up and/or do something with me, lewd or otherwise, please tell me explicitly or I won't realize :) I'm generally very open to that sort of thing!
Further boundaries: boosts are OK (including for lewd posts), DMs are open. But the devil doesn't need an advocate; I'm not interested in combative arguing in my mentions. I am however happy to explain things in-depth when asked non-combatively.
My spoons are limited, so I may not always have the energy to respond to messages.
Strong views about abolishing oppression, hierarchy, agency, and self-governance - but I also trust people by default and give them room to grow, unless they give me reason not to. That all also applies to technology and how it's built.
