Okay, I've seen online shops before that give you free extra products if you go over a certain order total... but I have to say that it's a first to see one that automatically adds them to your cart and *you cannot remove them*

: Cryptography question: when implementing an encrypted storage system that also deduplicates (ie. the same plaintext data should result in the same ciphertext), is there any reason why the nonce shouldn't also be deterministically derived from the input data?

(I understand the security tradeoffs introduced by having deduplication, I am only asking about whether specifically a deterministic *nonce* introduces any additional issues beyond that)

Hey kids, if you're removing fash stickers or other propaganda, good on you for cleaning up your neighborhood.

Just remember to always use a tool, and wear sturdy work gloves if necessary, because the tools putting that shit up sometimes hide dangerous surprises like razorblades or needles as a way to hurt anyone removing their shit by hand.

NixOS meta

Perhaps the clearest indicator that the governance issues are not going to be resolved through discussions on the forum: the fact that for the past several years, you can reliably sort nearly every post into one of two 'camps' by looking at who hit the like button, and the exact lists for each camp have barely changed.

Likes aren't a reliable indicator for much, but it sure shows that minds are not being changed, and that it's a much more fundamental conflict that probably isn't going to be resolved until one camp just *leaves* the project.

so, the fatigue limit for a material is the highest amount of stress that can be applied to that material for an infinite number of cycles without breaking.

aluminium has no such limit. every time you apply even a TINY bit of stress to it, you are contributing towards it eventually completely failing.

so you know how the cybertruck has a cast aluminium subframe that the towing hitch is attached to?

did you know that aluminium has no fatigue limit?

2023 train collision in Gdynia, the absolute state of train driver work conditions in Poland

the final report on the train collision that occurred on the Gdynia Główna station on October 5th, 2023

the cause of the crash has been determined to be one of the train drivers failing to act on a shunting signal with the "Stop" aspect, due to fatigue in the **12th hour of a night shift**, and time pressure caused by an unplanned need to refuel the diesel train

"the authorities are in agreement on the causes of the crash. that's why we're prosecuting the train driver responsible"

yet again the industry is in denial about systemic factors, because proper fixes would require systemic changes they cannot afford. but they can afford to be in denial about this. they have a scapegoat, you see

Liberals make me angrier than conservatives do.

With conservatives, you get what you pay for.

Liberals, on the other hand, will wish literal death on you if their candidate didn't win!

Their support is extremely transactional!

They look at what's happening and say "This is what y'all get!" instead of fighting against unjust systems!

It makes me fucking sick to my stomach!

Dansup (Pixelfed, Loops, and FediDB dev) 's treatment of Hazel, a dev that he excitedly announced was joining the Loops team only to later retract that and publicly berate her, catalogued here - dansup-open-letter.github.io/a - is gross.

Dansup's treatment of Tobi, one of the GoToSocial devs, and the GTS project in general, recently has also been gross - mastodon.art/@welshpixie/11395

PSA: There seems to be a host of stable #kindle #jailbreak s out there. If you, like me, have an older Kindle lying around, don't let it connect to Amazon for the latest firmware updates. Instead, head over to kindlemodding.org/jailbreaking and follow the instructions.

Only took a few minutes in my case :3

My mom accidentally referred to cryptocurrency as “kleptocurrency” this morning and I think I’m going to call it that from now on! 🤑

dansup is fucking brilliant. the guy writes issue templates (like, to make writing issues easier) and then deactivates issues (note the lack of the "issues" button next to the "pull requests" button. he intentionally toggled that off). thanks @nlnet for paying this totally honest developer

The wires ended up not working very well - however, they did inspire a slightly different solution. Instead of wires, I now fill up the slots with a solid layer - but only a *single* layer, instead of the full height, which is just enough to provide extra rigidity.

I've also slightly increased the thickness of the whole thing again, because it was bending at the hooks too much, risking breakage under weight. I've also modified the end hooks a bit; they are now actually hook-shaped, and thinner in some non-critical places.

The end result is a plastic cost of 1.65 meters; only slightly higher than the empty-slot version, which was about 1.55 meters. The original design was 3 meters!

The design seems about perfect now; the hooks only engage with the rim of the bin once it's under weight and the hooks are pulled towards it, whereas without weight there's enough margin that you can take off the whole net without getting stuck on that rim.

And it's working quite well with some stuff stacked on top of it! And a lot more stable than my previous corner design :)

I've been wondering, where *does* this idea come from that you need to show up with thousands of people for a protest to be 'meaningful' or 'effective'?

You only need a handful of people (like, under 100) to cause unrelenting havoc for a long time and force an organization's hand through direct action.

But to make a significant difference in an election, voting-wise, you need *way more* than a few thousand people, to do it reliably (and it must be reliable, because that's the threat underpinning the protest).

So then what strategy for change does this idea of "thousands of people protesting" serve, exactly?

*Does* it actually serve anyone's strategy?

Honestly, there should just be a tax on disposable packaging. Watch how quickly reusable packaging and refill setups become "cost-competitive".
