Let #Mozilla Fall.
It did its job (history will be the measure of its work), but we sorely need to move energy and effort to something with a concrete mission.
It's a nice community, until you witness things going south, and then you take notice of so many other lingering issues that the best course of action is to keep a healthy distance, and maybe talk to folks within that also notice the same issues but actually have the means to work on change
@anarchiv yeah it seems pointless to me to try to explain in detail how a different system would work, to someone who thinks that this (gestures at everything) is an example of something that works.
"Normally, when you challenge the conventional wisdom — that the current economic and political system is the only possible one — the first reaction you are likely to get is a demand for a detailed architectural blueprint of how an alternative system would work, down to the nature of its financial instruments, energy supplies, and policies of sewer maintenance. Next, you are likely to be asked for a detailed program of how this system will be brought into existence. Historically, this is ridiculous. When has social change ever happened according to someone’s blueprint? It’s not as if a small circle of visionaries in Renaissance Florence conceived of something they called 'capitalism,' figured out the details of how the stock exchange and factories would someday work, and then put in place a program to bring their visions into reality."
Dear #language friends,
is there a term for the thing where you forgot what something is really called and instead make up a new term that makes sense in context?
Examples:
- "drippy basket" for "dish drying rack"
- "food weapons" for "cutlery/silverware/flatware"
- "cobra chicken" for "Canada goose"
"I’ve watched this simple act, which protects the health of the wearer and everyone around them, get politicized and distorted into a sign of mental illness or criminal behavior. Anti-mask rhetoric that was met with disdain when it came from the fringe, alt-right in 2020 has made its way across the political spectrum and is now being promoted among even the most left “radical” groups. If there isn’t straight up hostility and vitriol, there’s often avoidance, annoyance, and refusal to accommodate mask requirements that would make spaces and gatherings accessible."

At this point, let Mozilla fall. It sounds fucked but they're sucking up the little amount of air and space that an actual NGO/non-profit/employee-owned organization with that kind of funding could do.
They (a new org) could push back *harder* against the bullshit that Google and Microsoft want at the IETF and work with the EFF/ACLU to draft legislation around citizen-centric computing.
US politics, Ukraine, narcissistc abuse, personal
For anyone who actually watched the exchange between the us government and President Zelenskyy.
I'm just one man in a sea of eight billion, not a war hero. But some little kid inside me needs it seen: that's how my malignant narcissist parents treated me. I know how it feels to sit in a room like that. Alone, with your own sense of ethics twisted against you. Wondering in some small part of you where the child still lives, if anything is worth it at all.
Just without the tv cameras and the huge responsibility and the world watching, which makes it infinitely worse for Zelenskyy.
I cut my parents off in 2016, three years after they last treated me that way. And it was as soon as I could make it happen. I hope some similar justice happens to the people in charge of america -- that the world goes No Contact.
I hope the entire world order remakes itself into something that destroys the possibility of people like that existing.
I will do what I can to help. Now you know a bit more about why. Slava Ukraini.
Aan alle schoonmakers die voor de NS werken dit weekend (inclusief maandagochtend): sterkte, en alvast bedankt.
it's also useful to correlate the financial trends and any notices of appointment or termination of directors against other sources of information like Glassdoor reviews.
couple examples:
- if someone mentions problems relating to a new director, you can go find out who that director was and see if they still work there
- if reviews mention high workload or turnover, you can see if that correlates with poor financial performance at that time. if so, maybe not an ongoing problem? if not... hmm
tip: if you interview for a company in the UK you can look them up on Companies House online and read their accounting records.
main metrics:
- look for the "profit and loss account" line, that'll tell you how much they made or lost in that year.
- look for the "cash at bank and in hand" line, that tells you how solvent they were in that year.
- the records also usually include an average staff count for the year.
useful for figuring out how business has been trending for them.
Technical debt collector and general hype-hater. Early 30s, non-binary, ND, poly, relationship anarchist, generally queer.
Sometimes horny on main (behind CW), very much into kink (bondage, freeuse, CNC, and other stuff), and believe it or not, very much a submissive bottom :p
Feel free to flirt, but if you want to actually meet up and/or do something with me, lewd or otherwise, please tell me explicitly or I won't realize :) I'm generally very open to that sort of thing!
Further boundaries: boosts are OK (including for lewd posts), DMs are open. But the devil doesn't need an advocate; I'm not interested in combative arguing in my mentions. I am however happy to explain things in-depth when asked non-combatively.
My spoons are limited, so I may not always have the energy to respond to messages.
Strong views about abolishing oppression, hierarchy, agency, and self-governance - but I also trust people by default and give them room to grow, unless they give me reason not to. That all also applies to technology and how it's built.
