The street here is outright crowded today. Painters are still repainting the block, bird-blocking mesh installers were installing today, the garbage truck came to pick up the plastic waste, then there was a DPD delivery (mattress) and a DHL delivery (box) several hours later, *and then* the 'leaf collection parade' (tractor + massive vacuum cart + two guys with leafblowers directing leaves towards it) showed up. It's a miracle that there haven't been any conflicts today.

Lidl moment: a manual that's bigger in volume than the product it came with

Tech CEO: Revenue, profits and subscribers are at an all time high and we are incredibly optimistic about our new products, therefore, we have no choice but to let go 20% of our employees. I take full responsibility for these layoffs, which will have no negative financial impact on me.

@joepie91 Same. I've always been a print debugger. I know how to use breakpoint/step debuggers, but I find that in many cases, print debugging is significantly faster and easier. My main reason for breakpoints on lines/variables/events is to figure out what the heck is calling/changing it, and after that I usually add some more print statements.

One of my favourite extremely simple features of Perl is that a bare "warn();" will print the file and line number to stderr at runtime.

Today, I present to you this image that goes so well with Halloween.
I had no idea Konijn was doing this until I zoomed in on the picture 😹

hey so i'm lookin' into fedi software versions for some plural friends, do any of the major offerings include easy account switching in-tab?

i'm not talking like apps or frontends i'm talking about like, gotosocial or glitchsoc or whatever

I love carving punkins

You do an Art with your friends

Nobody's really good at it

You share it briefly with your neighbours but it's by nature, ephemeral

It costs very little money; there's no way to monetize it

You don't have to justify it in terms of starting a new business or career

Baked punkin seeds are a great snack

The used punkin gets composted, there's approximately zero plastic involved and the worst thing you can say about it is that it's an inefficient use of a vegetable

The most effective tool in my debugging toolbox continues to be "log everything in sight to the console until something looks weird"

I am publishing a small #ActivityPub / #fediverse project: fietkau.software/webfinger_can and @canary 🙂

It is a tiny bot showcasing a split-domain WebFinger setup, where the handle domain is different from the ActivityPub server domain. This is supported by Mastodon and some other ActivityPub implementations, but not all of them.

So this project, aimed at devs and power users, is part test case, part feature recommendation/advocacy. The bot's website at correct.webfinger-canary.fietk has all the details.

Is anybody maintaining a collection of these "why this Mastodon instance is shutting down" posts? Because when I get some time I want to walk through and write an analysis of them with some proposals for help: muffinlabs.com/posts/2024/10/2

Still can't believe this footnote turned up in a court document

botsin.space PSA

Hey friends, it's hard to write this, but it's time to retire botsin.space. I wrote a post about it here: muffinlabs.com/posts/2024/10/2

TLDR the site will go read-only on or around December 15th.

I'm so thankful for all the support and good times here ❤️ thanks everyone

Update: I got an email from Hetzner's legal team today saying they came across my blog post (nice!). Paraphrasing:

- They're monitoring and understand that there is no actual abuse being done from these Tor relays getting spoofed.
- They emphasized that they do not routinely take action on this kind of abuse complaints, and that's why they forward them without requiring reply/action from the customer.

Love hearing this, and I'm actually impressed by Hetzner's response! Major props.

fedi meta, racism, @white people

I just read a post by someone bemoaning the loss of connection to Black and other communities as they shift to allow-list-only instances. I want to share my (slightly edited) reply more widely, because I think this is a thing many white people on here don't understand:

allow-list-only instances can (and likely will) still choose to federate with instances that don't allow unacceptable behavior toward them.

if you're on an instance that is allowing white supremacy to run rampant, then yes, you will lose access to Black and other communities negatively impacted by whiteness. is this an acceptable tradeoff for you? are you willing to push your instance mods to do better, or move to an instance where they will?

and if not, you need to sit with what that says about you. because you are very literally choosing to be part of the problem.

There is passing privilege, but there is also the privilege of not having to pass, it’s way more nuanced than black and white passing bad or passing good

Show thread

Passing is neither the end all be all of being trans, nor is it simply something you can ignore and trivialize, it’s an important mechanic of the trans experience and the way you deal with the concept is related to your geographical, socio-political and socio-economic realities

Yes maybe passing is “bullshit” if you’re a middle class tech workers in a progressive European Capital, but it absolutely is life or death in regressive countries where being trans is illegal and may result in a death penalty

Passing is like an unequally distributed social lubricant that like conventional beauty can become an obsession to the detriment of your life quality, but it’s also a tool of survival, and I feel most takes on the morality of passing really are way too personal and don’t generalize in the slightest
