Since I'm seeing a lot of "I have covid" posts, reminder that the WHO actually published a protocol for recovery after the illness to reduce the odds of Long Covid.

Tip if you have autistic friends*:

You know that thing where you're talking about wanting an orange, and they suddenly start rambling about status symbols in ancient Rome?

Info dumping is a display of trust and affection. Many autistic people have been repeatedly punished for being their true selves, often to the point of serious trauma. If they're letting you see into their very minds and sharing what they care most about, it's an act of vulnerability and trust.

Info dumping can also be because their brains are just full of stuff they've been obsessing over, and getting it out is their way of giving up what they love to make space for your conversation.

So, if you REALLY want to make their day, return the favor. Focus on their conversation instead of yours. The magic words are: "Really? Tell me more."

Just make sure you mean it. Authenticity matters. Then, sit back and enjoy a random TED lecture.

* Disclaimer: If you've met one autistic person, you've met one autistic person. Won't apply to all, but probably to most.

Also, are there any universities or conferences that put lecture & talk recordings on #peertube yet?

My Wayland implementation is in JS; it doesn't use libwayland, so I've had to figure out a lot of things from scratch because there's quite a lot about the protocol that just isn't documented. But once you can send and mmap file descriptors (two things Node.js does not do natively), it's very much viable!

The protocol is honestly not that complicated to implement. The problem really is just the documentation.

food (vegan)

Bread experiment progress: dough is completed and will proof overnight at room temperature. Significantly less yeast than normal, likewise much less salt (about a quarter of supermarket bread). Very curious if this works; if it does, I will have tasty and very low-salt bread!

Implementing-Wayland-from-scratch implementation progress: I now have an (incorrectly sized) rectangle rendering on my screen!

US politics, subtooting a political campaign (2)

Like, the claim is that this campaign does more than just election campaigning, and if so, that would be good.

But the framing everywhere as "we can gain political power by getting poor people to vote, and we can organize them" (as opposed to "we will support them in organizing themselves") is not exactly confidence-inspiring. Smells of saviour politics.

US politics, subtooting a political campaign

If you want to get poor people to vote, have you considered showing solidarity with them by materially supporting them and acknowledging the source of their misery, rather than pretending that poverty is a bipartisan issue and all you need to do is convince people to go vote?

US politics

Am I imagining things or does the Harris campaign actually recognize that there's a voter demographic under 50?

(And like all capitalist equivalents of other things, it has all the problems of the original thing, plus extra problems)

Scottish trans and maybetrans folks, get on a GIC waiting list NOW!

if you even have the slightest inkling that maybe you're trans, you have less than a week to self refer to a GIC.

Don't worry, you'll have a solid fucking decade to think it through anyway.

Apple. Apple please. You can't use the same short flag for two different things. Apple *please*

: Does anyone have a good article on how window positioning, sizing, bounds etc. are supposed to be handled in ? Something that goes into the different cases like the compositor telling you to resize your buffers, not just the standard initialization.

(Yes, I have read the XML already, so unless I overlooked something, what I'm looking for is probably not in there)

once again pissed off at censoring / sanitising language in subtitles. it's infantilising. I use subtitles all the time because of tinnitus and auditory processing issues, and I'll be damned if I want a bunch of handwringing prudish cunts fucking about with the language. censor ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in accessibility tools. I promise we're grown up enough to handle some swears and sex words, for shit's sake.

you can make connectors that look reversible from the outside (A, arguably mini), or you can make a fancy reversible connector that a nontrivial number of engineers will half-ass and get wrong (C), or you can use the one that has an obvious orientation so nobody has this problem at all

Oh, remember those USB-rechargeable 9V batteries I bought a while ago?

Yeah, definitely DO NOT use them in a smoke alarm. They go from 9V to 0V as soon as the internal cell’s under-voltage cutoff is hit. A real 9V battery slowly loses voltage as it discharges, the smoke alarm monitors this and makes annoying beeping noises when the battery voltage goes under a threshold.

⚠️ Going from 9V straight to 0V gives you a dead smoke alarm with no warning ⚠️

UPDATE: I pulled this battery apart to find out how it works, and it’s exactly like I said here. Thread continues below with photos of the inside of the battery
