ahem Hello, #MastodonForHarris folks

First of all, can you share my pinned? I think Harris' megadonors will have her more than comfortably covered for the foreseeable future.

Second of all, if you say you care about BIPOC, or queer/trans people, or disabled people, etc., then take a few minutes to browse the #MutualAid and #MutualAidRequest tags. Passing around the same $20 only gets us all so far, you know.

Third of all: I sure hope people understand that Harris will not fix everything. A lot of marginalized people have genuine criticism of her, and - quite understandably - want nothing to do with her. The systems of oppression that govern the lives of said people will remain in place, just with a kinder face/better PR team. She's not the solution. She's not even the stopgap measure. She's just how you slow down the clock ever so slightly.

So act like it, and take action down on the ground, in ignorance of the State. Sure, vote for her. But that can't be all you do.

I want this to be totally clear. "DEI Hire" isn't just shorthand for Black (or not white.) It contains the assumption that people who aren't white are inherently inferior and, thus, inherently unqualified. Therefore, any person saying this is a white supremacist racist full stop.

re: blockchain shit, caps

Apparently it's causing massive issues for RubyGems and PyPI, too.

blockchain shit, caps

Oh look, the 'tea' get-paid-to-publish-open-source blockchain thing is vulnerable to the exact same basic attack that had already been spotted by everyone who's looking into developer compensation before (where distributing money based on package count incentivizes making spam packages) and now the npm search is completely useless because it's full of spam.

Like, guys, there's a *reason* many of us never went ahead with implementing this model for maintainer compensation. Because it DOESN'T FUCKING WORK, in ways that are extremely obvious if you'd thought about it for ten seconds.

Me: Hmmm I wonder if I can get a spare part for this fairly cheap stand mixer I got 7 years ago?
Bosch: Absolutely! Even though we haven’t sold this device for five years we still provide all the spare parts. What do you need?

Me: Hmmm I wonder if I can fix this stupidly expensive broken piece of electronics that’s 1 day past warranty?
Tech industry: lol no, buy a new device. Also this company went out of business three times in the last 2 years, had a crypto thing and does AI now.

Apparently, a comedian *isn't* a shared middle-point between many series of values. Who knew?!

followup, re: meta, "you"

Actually, to make the question you should be asking more explicit:

Do you really want to get people out of poverty, or do you just want poverty to get out of your view?

meta, "you"

If it upsets you more that a bunch of desperate and upset poor folks are begging you for help than that they are, y'know, starving - that seems like a thing you should be reflecting on for a while.

also i really hope that people aren't seriously jockeying for Harris to create a mastodon profile

cause if folks refuse to understand what an epic risk that would be to so many people here from an op-sec standpoint?

whheeeewww buddy!

Genius. Barcode scanners act as keyboard devices, so you can use them to enter eg Bitlocker keys much faster and without error than typing them manually:

(Also pairs nicely with the TikTok I saw of a barcode scanner hooked up as a midi controller)

PCB design, silly, slightly lewd

I'm a professional and can be trusted with PCB design.

⚠️ crowdfunding PSA ⚠️

FUN FACT: you can post your #MutualAid requests in the #MastodonForHarris hashtag to make sure they'll be seen by people who, apparently, have ludicrous oodles of money to burn. also it's praxis

EDIT: they have now moved to #Mastodon4Harris like with the number 4 instead of "for"

boosts appreciated :boostRequest:

So you got cash leftover that you wish to give to a good cause, yeah? Money leftover you don't actually have an intermediate need for, and doesn't affect your own essentials and well being?

Then support folks on #MutualAid, support campaigns that give aid to #Palestine, use your money support #Rojava, to #IndigenousResistance, to resistance fighters in #Myanmar, to help #Armenia, to help #Ukraine. Heck, use your money to support you local community initiatives to help everyone close around you. Send money to that one family member you do know struggles financially.

But for crying out loud, don't donate your cash to the already well off and thriving. The rich don't need your money. #MastodonForHarris is like throwing money into an Scrooge McDucks money vault, already filled to the brim.

There's people on this platform that genuinely are crying out for help. Don't ignore their voices. Help us.

Modern science relies on (open source) software and hardware, but whereas creating tools (writing code) can be turned into academic currency (papers), there is currently no incentive for researchers to provide feedback and improvement suggestions for tools despite how valuable these contributions are to the scientific community as a whole. One possible way forward would be to treat "issue creation" and other Git-based activity as an acceptable form of peer review.

This is an issue and idea I’ve been thinking about for a while. I’d love to flesh it out into an actual set of actionable proposals/suggestions, as well as figuring out which (technological) hurdles would need to be overcome, in a opinion-styled paper - could anyone be interested in working on this together with me?

Please share!

PSA: UK immigration, indefinite leave to remain

We recently learned about the UK's new eVisa system; since official communications on the topic seem kinda non-existent, I wanted to raise awareness.

If you're in the UK on indefinite leave to remain, but *don't* already have a biometric residence permit, you'll need a BRP before you can be transitioned over to the new eVisa system in early 2025.

They recommend applying for a BRP *as soon as possible*, since it can take up to 6 months to process.

#MastodonForHarris be like: "Let's support one of the most well funded and richest people in the world, while ignoring all the folks who genuinely need help on this platform, and doesn't get help they need from a country that social welfare is basically non-existent. They're just 'lazy' and 'attention seekers!'"

Fucking clowns 🤡 Show some goddamn solidarity with your fellow human beings

Ah, I see that Secure Boot has been widely broken again. Must be a Tuesday.
