That happy "Wow! I hate this more!" comic, but with first hating Nix semicolon syntax and then discovering how Turtle (RDF) uses semicolons

Two years ago today I tested positive for Covid. I was fit and healthy and expected to be back to normal in a few days. It's been two years and I still can't walk 50 yards.

The only people who think #LongCovid is no big deal are those who don’t know enough about it.

we gotta stop calling LLMs "ai" you gays:

there's nothing intelligent about it; it's literally not "AI" at all, in the same way that throwing darts completely randomly at a board and occasionally hitting triple 20, then optimizing for that, isn't "playing darts"
it validates the marketing work done by total asshole shills; it's giving them oxygen
makes it sound way cooler than it is, and makes people working on it sound way smarter than they are (didn't we learn this lesson with blockchain? They're dickhead, world-burning capitalist charlatans all the way down)

So instead of "ai" I propose we start calling large language models "ugg", for "unwanted garbage generator".

Advantages of "ugg":

sounds like something a caveman would say
can be grunted in frustration
emphasizes that it's fucking garbage

Thank you!

Like nothing says “we dont hire nor consult people with accessibility needs when developing accessibility features” as making said features:

1: turned off by default
2: not visible except for ppl who use 3rd party voiceover tools
3: requires too many steps to use
4: difficult or not possible to streamline for cross posting (copy paste)
5: feature obscures or alter the original post way more than needed

I see these things on bluesky, tumblr and official mastodon app. Embarassing.

hey my friend @heckinwes is looking for resources on worker's rights in seattle washington

his roomie feels like she's being unfairly retaliated against and needs to talk to someone who knows the law better

so he asked me to make this post 😁

the reason the phrase "let's agree to disagree on our political views" always bugs me is because it's kind of impossible for me to be friends with people, who, say, want to see people like me in the pits of hell, or think threatening people with certain death unless they work is okay. you can't divorce ethics from politics

Fuck software that clears your input if you start typing before something has fully loaded

I don’t need “ai” in my terminal, I’m perfectly capable of typing something that looks plausible but does something completely unexpected myself thanks

so apparently there's a museum dedicated to old telephony/communication adjacent stuff in Seattle on the west coast of the US, and most of the volunteers under 40 are very visibly queer, why am I not surprised?

"Fortune favors the bold." is a common misconception. What you're actually seeing there is survivorship bias. Most adventurers don't survive the first goblin, but nobody tells stories about them.

So, it's confirmed that it did cause more harm than initially thought.
A database cleanup on ragelove caused follower and follows connections to be dropped with Weirder.earth. (it's not because a suspend un-suspend or anything like that, it's because the script apparently saw the server as unavailable and purged)

That means you might still see us as following each other, but I don't, so you need to unfollow and follow again. I noticed it on two friends because I was talking with them that they, and then hoped it was just a visual glitch, I was wrong.

So if you think we're mutuals can you check in with me so I can refollow your w e account! If you're on that server and sees this, boosts are also welcome.

I feel like half of Academia StackExchange is just "how do I deal with this abusive dude" questions

95% of PC cases now have buttons and ports on upper surface. Apparently people who are responsible for design of those, nowadays don't even try to take into account the case "I have a cat who occassionally steps on power button".

i received a DM earlier. i am not going to call out the person who DM'd me, but i am going to publicly share my response, because it is important. the context is @drewdevault@fosstodon.org's blog post earlier today about RMS. the person DMing me suggests for the "proper" place for this discussion was in the FSF channels and with RMS himself.

my response is this, verbatim:

"no. if we cannot discuss issues like this in places not directly controlled by the people at the root of the issue - e.g. in this instance, RMS and people sympathetic to him - then the reality is that we cannot discuss them at all.

we cannot restrict the discussion of difficult topics to forums controlled by people who might rather not have those topics talked about. there is a power imbalance, whether or not that power is used.

is free speech still free speech if, whether by rule or by cultural norm, you are only to criticize a king from within his castle, surrounded by his guards, with only the audience of himself and those who have chosen to be in that environment? even if the guards take no action against you, and allow you to freely speak your mind, there is no question in that situation that you do not hold the power, and you are at the mercy of those who do.

and, ever so frequently, they do exercise the power to silence or eject you, and if we do as you suggest, you are left with no acceptable avenue in which to exercise your right to speak.

you must be able to criticize the king in your home, or in the tavern, or on the streets, or wherever you choose, in places where his guards have no power. you must be able to do this with other people who would not have chosen to subject themselves to the king's court. you must be able to loudly proclaim his faults, so that those who would never have had reason to find themselves in his castle may hear, and understand.

the king will not dethrone himself because someone entered his court and made a good point. he will dethrone himself because crowds of people outside his court are making their opinions known, and he knows that if he does not, the castle he worked so hard to build will fall with him inside."

a friend is having a tough time on all area's of her life and is desperately fighting her suicidality and trying to be alive.
She's hurt by posts about nazi's she keeps seeing.
She sees the discourse of people saying 'this is to important to CW'.
My friend can't cope with this news today. She shouldn't have to.

People who have the mental capacity to get angry about the news in healthy ways, probably also have enough spoons to click on that 'show more' button.

Yes it's important. But it needs to be CW'd.

(it's nazis today and racism tomorrow and war yesterday and transphobia next week. Please CW them all.)

Looking for someone in #Seattle who is capable of soldering leads onto a few routers so we can access their serial ports. All of these routers are the same model, I even have an example router that has the TX, RX and Ground pins soldered.

Trying to debug mainline OpenWRT boot issues on this model of device, which is hard to do without seeing the device's log while booting up.
