@joepie91 That's because academia (and so many other modern collectives) have been built on the notion of somebody Higher Up(tm) collecting random people, and then they just working well together. The possibility of letting people select their own workmates is usually not even considered.
And when "teams" are arbitrarily assigned by people who are themselves outside such "teams", toxic dynamics immediately become easy to arise and hard to get rid of.
