It would appear that “former Tory MP Antoinette Sandbach has threatened the University of Cambridge with legal action after a historian named her as a descendant of merchants who enslaved his ancestors.”

theguardian.com/world/2023/aug

Oh, my… It would be a damn shame if more people knew of this so please do not boost this post.

A very unscientific poll about light and dark modes on web sites:

FYI, when a website erases your text that you just spent an hour writing, you can use this little trick to recover it 99% of the time:

1. find the firefox pid

$ pgrep -l firefox

2. attach gdb to firefox and dump its core

$ sudo gdb <pid>
gcore firefox.dump
<this takes awhile>
quit
<firefox dies>

3. find your lost text in the coredump

$ strings firefox.dump | grep "a unique word/sentence from ur text"

i just did this today to recover a long post i wrote, and figured i'd show others!! :uxn:

Actually yes, the ends *can* justify the means, and if you really believe that the justifiability of the means is completely separate from the ends, you should probably ask yourself who that belief benefits

using -c copy with ffmpeg because my video is already trans-coded

re: EFF, kiwifarms, death, harassment :boost_requested:

I also particularly can't stand the "instead of putting this responsibility on ISPs, you should put pressure on authorities to crack down on this" type argument that so often gets raised on topics like this.

Like, how about you go try that yourself, and then we'll meet back here in a year or two, once you've figured out for yourself why that's not what we're putting our energy into. Deal?

Like, I basically started over my bookkeeping for the entirety of 2022 and 2023 (so far), from scratch, with hledger, and it *still* took me less time and frustration than it likely would have taken to finish the last bits in GnuCash

Show thread

Verdict: hledger has its quirks and issues, and I had to write my own MT940 importer, but it is orders of magnitude nicer to work with than the horror that is GnuCash

Loving the commentary on this thread on an external forum, insinuating that I "have no idea what I'm doing and what the consequences will be of posting things like this"

It's not as if I've spent the better part of the past 15 years deliberating the complexities of this topic, or anything like that

Nah, I'm not following the Respectable Viewpoint, so I must just be clueless!

My fiancé left his desk like this before going to work 🦊

more apps should have the option to see the raw JSON for things you're browsing tbh. something like in element and fluffychat for the messages (I think enabled in settings to see this)

all I'm saying is that if *I* were gonna write a horror-sci-fi short story about a new medication, for any purpose, it would definitely involve corporate M&A in the backstory somewhere

*continues doing taxes*

Switching my bookkeeping stack at the last moment was definitely a good idea

New study gave $7,500 to 50 unhoused people.

Guess what?

"They did not spend more money on alcohol or drugs, contrary to what people believe, and instead they spent the money on rent, food, housing, transit, furniture, a used car, clothes. It's entirely the opposite of what people think they're going to do with the money."

Congrats to my UBC colleague Jiaying Zhao on this study.

What I wouldn't give to have a spray tan place that does fun colors. Give me pink skin, let me look like Data, I wanna be slightly unsettling and scare more conservatives.

Please CW your needles, especially if depicted in art and ESPECIALLY if they are actively being used (i.e. injected)

Sincerely, someone who really needs it.
