Honestly, how can any public health professional say with a straight face, "Sure, the COVID vaccine only lasts for six months, but most people aren't vaccinating, so not only are we not going to recommend getting vaccinated twice per year, we're not going to even allow it for the people who want to."
Since when is one person's healthcare supposed to be dependent on whether other people are willing to take care of themselves?
#COVID
This is a weird request, but I figure the worst I can get for it is silence. I'm totally #blind and have very bad hearing. To set up a device through its inaccessible software, I'm in need of a sighted person for about an hour and a half to two hours who can access a computer remotely, speaks and reads English, and can describe images and graphs. The person needs to be quite patient with follow-up questions, needs to be willing to repeat if needed, as well as be able to click on items and describe what happens on the screen. The person needs to be fairly detail oriented because some of the images appear to have arrows and other ways to expand them, according to the manual. Though I'm happy to be reasonable, I have no clue how much to offer as payment, this is my first request of this kind. I'm posting it because I know we have some blind people here who may be able to point me towards someone who has done this before and may be willing to do it for such a short period. Boosts welcome, indeed, they're appreciated. #hearingimpaired #software #A11Y #accessibility #remote
And to emphasize, this is just one of many, many, *many* things about Mozilla that are shaped like this. If this were a single incident, it wouldn't be a big deal. But it's like this almost constantly.
In today's episode of "is #Mozilla really a community-oriented organization?":
Apparently there was a project called Starling that functioned as a proof-of-concept for using Servo (instead of CEF) to build an Electron-like runtime. Source: https://groups.google.com/g/mozilla.dev.servo/c/U5zhsBLXovM/m/HbRL69zZBAAJ (search for 'Starling').
I had never heard of this before I saw it mentioned in that thread, so I searched for a bit, and landed on this thread: https://github.com/servo/servo/discussions/28411, which basically asks "this Starling thing that apparently exists, where can we find it?"
The answer is "There are no such apps at this time". Was there ever a project? Was it ever published? Was it cancelled? Who knows! No trace left, apparently, of something that people have been asking for for years.
How community-oriented is Mozilla really, when a highly-desired project like this apparently exists without people knowing about it, and the work seemingly never seems the light of day, and just gets axed internally without any opportunity for the community to continue working on it and refining it?
Haha, nice! XR took out a full-page advert in the Volkskrant newspaper today listing the names of people who are calling for another blockade of the A12 highway in The Hague on September 9th, three weeks from now.
1800 people doing the same thing as seven people got arrested for. Power in numbers, fuck yeah! 😄✊🏻
https://www.dutchnews.nl/2023/08/1800-join-call-for-climate-blockade-in-the-hague-next-month/
Speaking of Extinction Rebellion; the Dutch justice department, which charged those seven folks with ‘opruiing’, probably best translated as 'incitement' in this context, now demands DNA from those seven people.
Why? Because incitement carries a maximum sentence of five years, and anything above four requires that a DNA sample be taken, and be kept on file for up to 20 years. Doesn't matter that they got sentenced to 30 hours of community service.
I agree that it's basically just an intimidation tactic, and I wonder how the use of it against XR balances out vs. the farmers protests 🤔
about the ubiquity of racism, second person re: old comedy skit reference
part of why we posted the above ☝🏽 is because white culture tries to teach, you, us, and everyone that racism is rare.
racism isn't rare. you don't get cops telling their subordinates to arrest more black people from racism being rare. you don't get textbooks praising the kindness of slavery from racism being rare. you don't get infantilizing descriptions of "primitive people" in children's books from racism being rare.
in order to have a society that approves of piping toxic water to entire cities and laying brand new pipelines ready to pollute even more water, a racism that is rare just won't cut it. it has to be *extremely normalized* to poison Black and Indigenous communities. any resistance to that has to be perceived as abberational.
and really, the reason we're talking about this?
you shouldn't be surprised if something normal *to you* is racist.
like books we grew up reading. or videogames we played for hundreds of hours.

I really think one of the most compelling reasons for always masking is that you no longer have to evaluate whether or not you "should be wearing a mask" because covid ain't going anywhere in the foreseeable future so the answer is just always "yes", zero mental calculus required. Nice, simple, clean

Geeez this site has heaps of game making programs I haven't heard of before:
I've recently started maintaining OpenCrystalCaves, an #OpenSource reimplementation of the shareware #DOS platformer game Crystal Caves!
https://github.com/gurka/OpenCrystalCaves
You can jump around the levels but everything else is unimplemented - enemies, health, items, most of the levels... but I'm starting with project infrastructure, like multi platform CI. Just did a massive yak shave and added bitmap font rendering and optimized texture rendering 🤦♂️
