I thought my HP Chromebook had kernel issues that didn't keep it in suspend, but now I think applying pressure (e.g. in a backpack) triggers keypresses with the lid closed... :blobfoxfacepalm:

This is a *fascinating* concept for games studies - "quotes" of a game that don't just show you a clip of gameplay, but actually let you take control and try it out. It trims the ROM down to only what's needed to run the quote, so this might even pass a fair dealing/fair use test in court if it came down to it - just like quoting a passage of text, or a clip of a movie.

Overheard 2 businessmen discussing corporate office changes so that employees "won't feel like just a cog in a machine."

They came up with these 'great' strategies:

- Rearrange the cubicles
- Art on the walls
- Seat managers closer to employees
- More team fun events

Notably not discussed:

- More pay
- Profit sharing
- More ownership of decisions & input
- Recognition of employee successes
- More PTO and/or work-life flexibility
- WFH options

Good luck guys! 😆

Actually, thinking about it more, I might as well repost this publicly...

Is it just me, or does that Veilid project smell a bit weird?

Like, the involvement of someone from hackers.town, the "source drop" release strategy without initial development in the open, the seemingly intense marketing, the apparent lack of a coherent document explaining the architecture/design, while at the same time heavily focusing on the technical side with not a word on the topic of abuse management...

Any of these individually wouldn't necessarily be an issue, but altogether it smells a bit... sus to me

Here's your periodic reminder about how cursed Japanese wiring is.

This is an official, standard Apple power cable that shipped with a MacBook.

I should get a tiny remote control forklift and use it to automate loading floppy disks into my computers.

y'know I don't know what PCMCIA stands for but I'll always remember it as People Can't Master Computer Industry Acronyms, which is to say I've had a toot calibre joke locked and loaded since I was five but the technology it referenced stopped mattering since I was fifteen

There are two types of conspiracy theories, antisemitism and things that the CIA has admitted to doing.

I am very disappointed that the initial response of so many people to "Hashicorp switched to BSL and it's no longer FOSS" is some variant of "but how else will they make money, if not for using the BSL?", and not "what effects will this have for everybody else, especially the community contributors?"

Like, this is corporate apologism, whether you realize it or not, and it is absolutely a habit to unlearn. Yes, also when the corporation claims it's to protect from another corporation. Propaganda is a thing that exists.

Your first response should always be "what about the people", never "what about the corporation"!

The Professor of Spellcraft studied the parchment.
"Hmm. No, I have not seen this spell before. What does it do?"
"When you read it out, it creates a parchment with that spell written on it."
"That's all?"
"Isn't that neat?"
"But why?"
"To see if I could."
"Ah!"

If you currently identify as a cis man or cis woman, but:

• You have recurring thoughts of being a different gender.
• You would be a different gender, if given the choice.
• You wouldn't be fussed if you magically woke up one day as a different gender.

... you might be interested to know that this isn't a common thing for cis folks to do 😅

Anyway, there's this weird overlap in computing spaces between authoritarians masquerading as libertarians, libertarians, and people who actually care about other people.

I'm reading a book on how this came to be right now, and it is laying bare a lot of the inherent cognitive dissonance in computing that I've managed to avoid confronting this far in to my life, and helping me to see the contradictions in in my own circles.

Computers are a force multiplier.

Remember when the Raspberry Pi foundation made fun of people who criticized their decision to brag about hiring a former cop who used their products to spy on people?

This is far from the first time this happens in a company with a supposedly good and FOSS-friendly reputation, and yet I still get indignant comments every time I reject corporate FOSS suggestions...

"Why don't you trust corporate FOSS? It's still FOSS, isn't it? Why are you being so difficult?"

Honestly salaries should just be legally required to automatically increase according to the inflation rate.

(If you think that's a bad idea because it would lead to hyperinflation, I would invite you to introspect for a moment on what that says about income inequality and where the inflation comes from)

ive had conversations with people who are Unwilling to change their opinion even though i have receipts and proof of their opinion being wrong

then a few days later, for the fuck of it, i'll have the same conversation with them, this time repeating their own opinion back to them

all of the sudden they are self-rightious because they have a better opinion again: the one i recited to them several days earlier 😅

i see through your shit & you know too, i can tell lmao
