Nu even de realiteit, die ik weet als Nederlander levend in de tropen.
Een temperatuur die lekker is aan het strand, liggend met een ijskoud drankje in je hand, is misschien minder aangenaam als je niet op het strand bent, maar op je oprit bezig bent en onderhoud aan je huis en tuin probeert te plegen. Of gewoon een job hebt waarbij je in de buitenlucht inspanningen moet verrichten. Of probeert je conditie op peil te houden.
Luchtvochtigheid is een allesbepalende factor. Hier in Frans Polynesie kan ik me uitsloven zonder het te warm te krijgen. Aan het einde van de dag trek ik de conclusie dat ik 4 liter water heb gedronken en maar 1 keer naar de WC ben geweest. Waarom? De lucht is droog, transpiratie verdampt direct en doet daarmee zijn afkoelende werk. Een veel lagere temperatuur is in Nederland al funest, het is broeierig, het zweet loopt in straaltjes van je lijf, want de lucht is vochtig, zweet verdampt niet en mist daardoor zijn afkoelende werking. Bij een 100% luchtvochtigheid is 35 graden al dodelijk voor een mens in rust.
Een hogere luchttemperatuur zorgt voor meer irritante insecten. Ik anker onze boot altijd op redelijke afstand van de kust (heb ik ook meer reden om te zwemmen), dus mijn boot is onbereikbaar voor de meeste muggen, kakkerlakken en meer van dat soort vervelend spul. Maar als in Nederland de “normale” temperatuur omhoog gaat, wedden dat binnen de kortste keren, net als hier, er in de supermarkt een ruimer assortiment valt te beleven aan kakkerlak bestrijdende middelen dan aan tandpasta (wat ook nu al ruim is in Nederland)?
Lekker zwemmen in de zee? Het is niet meer zo verfrissend als de zeewatertemperatuur eveneens mee omhoog gaat. Het aantal micro-organismen in het water stijgt exponentieel. Ik zwem hier rond de mooiste koraalriffen ter wereld, met een zicht dat gemakkelijk meer dan 30 meter diep gaat. Ondanks het chemisch volkomen zuivere water krijgen veel mensen hier infecties. Gezond water bevat tal van microben, die nuttig zijn voor het ecosysteem, maar niet altijd compatibel zijn met het menselijk gestel. Warm zeewater is niet beter dan wat kouder zeewater. Ook in Noorwegen hebben ze een prachtig ecosysteem, maar ondanks het koudere water minder risicovol voor mensen. En in tropische omstandigheden is “tropisch zwemwater” vaak te warm om in verkoelend opzicht functioneel te zijn.
Hittegolven zijn niet leuk. De Nederlander associeert “tropisch weer” met BBQ-en en nietsen met een drankje in de hand, maar als het een alledaags verschijnsel wordt tijdens werkdagen dan is de lol er snel af. De hoge luchtvochtigheid zal blijven en daarmee is het Nederlandse klimaat (weer) slechter dan in landen die er voor waren voorbestemd. Net als dat je tijdens wintersport in je T-shirt in de sneeuw kan zitten maar in Nederland zowat dood gaat als je ‘s ochtends de ramen van je auto moet krabben in temperaturen die eigenlijk helemaal niet eens zo koud zijn als tijdens je ski-vakantie…
Like, trucks catching on fire is plausible. Highway structures collapsing under intense heat is plausible.
But then why do I never hear about collapsing highways over here? We have trucks and highway structures too. What's the differing factor?
One of the more baffling phenomena to me is when USians, after some sort of disaster or incident, go "well, of course that went wrong in that way, because <plausible sounding reason>"
And like, the reason really *does* sound plausible, but then I also can't help but notice that this same type of incident *does not meaningfully happen elsewhere* even though the same reasoning would apply there too, so... what extra context is missing there??
(This thought prompted by the I-95 fire incident, but it's far from the first time I've observed this)
