“The Earth is not dying-it is being killed. And the people who are killing it have names and addresses.”

@MerlinJStar the Internet has revolutionized free access to information as long as the information you want is written on a paywall

Like, if you comment that "JS needed a standard module system, it didn't have one yet", you're extremely telling on yourself - why do you think that CommonJS was called *Common*JS, exactly?

So my ES Modules post has ended up on HN (oh no) and it's very clear that, as usual, the HN commenters are completely unfamiliar with the history of the thing they're opining on

I remain deeply suspicious whenever code "just works" on the first attempt.

What would science and discovery look like, if we approached ideas and concepts as living entities to befriend and interact with, as opposed to commodities to extract and exploit?

I am so damn tired of corporations in every sense

the snacks I buy keep getting smaller

the flavors keep fading in prepared foods

corporate social media keeps pulling features and shoving in ads

the ads on tv are at least a decibel higher than the content

the billboards along the roads are so bright and colorful they overwhelm my eyes

the endless cracked concrete downtown radiates the sun and makes walking painful

the endless cars are too loud, I can't stand to be outside

most of my friends don't even know the name of a single politician for our region, be it federal, provincial, or municipal

the lights in Walmart are too bright and they buzz

there are no affordable local grocery stores in my city, they died out to Walmart and it's like before I was born

every brand of bread has way too much sugar and it aggravates my ibs

I feel so suffocated and demoralized but no one seems to care

Every programming language needs a cute mascot that can be used as a substitute for the actual language name

Radical opinion, communist propaganda

I just wanna nourish my friends and help them grow through things, and find a way of existing around each other that lets us flourish and experience moments of childlike wonder together

@haskal I think both types of opensource projects should exist.

If I just write some neat one-off script to do a thing, I don't think I should have to support it beyond what I need from it. I'll just open source it to give others who want similar things an easier starting point.

If I build an app or a library that I actually want other people to use, it is my responsibility to make sure it's as accessible as it can be

hey admins please understand that if a local user is misbehaving and you limit their profile, that doesn't federate. Only your local users will stop seeing them, and they are now free to piss off the rest of the fediverse with impunity

Cool idea for art schools: block IPs of Adobe license verification servers for one week each semester to simulate the future.

I wish we'd stop using the term "derivations" in and start using "build tasks" or something similarly obvious, it's such a source of confusion

There really ought to be another SquatConf at some point

re: reddit

@qch3n @joepie91 from what I heard, because of a whole buncha subreddits going private, the front page couldn’t gather enough posts so it just crashes and burns.

re: reddit

@joepie91 It was totally 100% expected, but we didn't plan for it for some reason. 🤪

looking for work, sort of, software :boost_requested:

(Probably only going to post this once, as I dislike advertising but I do need a place to start)

So I'm a freelancer (mainly for ADHD reasons) doing software-y things, and I'm currently looking for some more clients, because I'm uncomfortable with how few clients I'm currently dependent on for my income.

I've also been wanting to start doing something different that involves less scheduling and aligns better with my disabilities: flat-fee expert support for stuff (and probably stuff, realistically).

If you know someone (most likely, a small company or team) who might be interested in trialing this, please let me know!

The pitch: you get a flat-fee expert support plan for around 1800 EUR per month (final price TBD), with unlimited tickets for JS/Nix problems, including (especially!) the complicated problems. Much cheaper than hiring an expert full-time for occasional tricky issues, and less hassle than eg. hourly billing of freelancers.

I have 17+ years of experience with web development (including JS), 7 years of experience with Nix/NixOS, and 9+ years of experience with technical writing and teaching. Also a grab-bag of experience with many other (weird) things, the usual ADHD stuff.

All support tickets go through e-mail, and are answered on a best-effort basis (realistically usually same-day, but that's not a hard guarantee). Complexity of the problem doesn't matter, I'll figure it out. If it's outside of those topics, I'll try to answer it to the best of my ability, but no guarantees.

There's no limit to the amount of tickets, but of course it's not going to make sense to create tickets for simple problems, because it'll be faster to just figure it out yourself. That's how I plan to keep this sustainable on my end without having to *actively restrict* the amount of issues.

So yeah, if that sounds useful to you or someone you know, please reach out! None of the details are set in stone yet, so if something custom is needed, please do ask. You can also reach me via e-mail at info@ossworks.nl.

It's more like ten kilometers to the left but yes, they are moving a big chunk of the town. Kiruna is a mining town and the cracks from the mine is reaching the town itself, so the mining company is paying to have chunks of the town torn down and rebuilt, cus otherwise it'll just fall into a deep dark hole.

me: So are they moving the town of Kiruna 10 centimeters to the left or something?

my brother: (looking at me like I'm a complete idiot) Yes, that is exactly what they are doing.
