re: reddit

@qch3n @joepie91 from what I heard, because of a whole buncha subreddits going private, the front page couldn’t gather enough posts so it just crashes and burns.

re: reddit

@joepie91 It was totally 100% expected, but we didn't plan for it for some reason. 🤪

looking for work, sort of, software :boost_requested:

(Probably only going to post this once, as I dislike advertising but I do need a place to start)

So I'm a freelancer (mainly for ADHD reasons) doing software-y things, and I'm currently looking for some more clients, because I'm uncomfortable with how few clients I'm currently dependent on for my income.

I've also been wanting to start doing something different that involves less scheduling and aligns better with my disabilities: flat-fee expert support for stuff (and probably stuff, realistically).

If you know someone (most likely, a small company or team) who might be interested in trialing this, please let me know!

The pitch: you get a flat-fee expert support plan for around 1800 EUR per month (final price TBD), with unlimited tickets for JS/Nix problems, including (especially!) the complicated problems. Much cheaper than hiring an expert full-time for occasional tricky issues, and less hassle than eg. hourly billing of freelancers.

I have 17+ years of experience with web development (including JS), 7 years of experience with Nix/NixOS, and 9+ years of experience with technical writing and teaching. Also a grab-bag of experience with many other (weird) things, the usual ADHD stuff.

All support tickets go through e-mail, and are answered on a best-effort basis (realistically usually same-day, but that's not a hard guarantee). Complexity of the problem doesn't matter, I'll figure it out. If it's outside of those topics, I'll try to answer it to the best of my ability, but no guarantees.

There's no limit to the amount of tickets, but of course it's not going to make sense to create tickets for simple problems, because it'll be faster to just figure it out yourself. That's how I plan to keep this sustainable on my end without having to *actively restrict* the amount of issues.

So yeah, if that sounds useful to you or someone you know, please reach out! None of the details are set in stone yet, so if something custom is needed, please do ask. You can also reach me via e-mail at info@ossworks.nl.

It's more like ten kilometers to the left but yes, they are moving a big chunk of the town. Kiruna is a mining town and the cracks from the mine is reaching the town itself, so the mining company is paying to have chunks of the town torn down and rebuilt, cus otherwise it'll just fall into a deep dark hole.

me: So are they moving the town of Kiruna 10 centimeters to the left or something?

my brother: (looking at me like I'm a complete idiot) Yes, that is exactly what they are doing.

re: reddit

"Reddit confirmed to TechCrunch a planned protest against its new policy has caused the outage."

"“A significant number of subreddits shifting to private caused some expected stability issues, and we’ve been working on resolving the anticipated issue,” said Reddit spokesperson Tim Rathschmidt."

That's some desperate language lmao

And if I were a Reddit investor, I would probably be scratching my head right about now

If I were Reddit, I simply wouldn't phrase the server outage page such that it accuses the user of being at fault

So this thing is kinda subversive in how we think about computers and games consoles (and yes the capitalism around them), in that you buy it, you fill it with games, you play the games, and that's it, you're done.

You don't need to buy a new one every couple of years, it doesn't get slower, and there are more excellent games than you could play with all the time in the world. You're done with the buying, find new favourite games.

The most Weird And Cool thing this does is it came with Celeste, for the Pico-8.

The Pico-8 was not a thing. It was never made. It was never even prototyped! But the Game Dad has a Pico-8 emulator.

So what the hell is a Pico-8? As far as I can tell, it's an agreed-upon set of specs for a console that never existed, that people are now making games for?

There are people with socks so high and so striped that they can straight-up LARP a console into semiexistence! ASPIRATIONAL LIFE GOALS

Also, holy heck is this thing crying out for new indie games.

Like, this is so, so much of a better platform for mobile gaming than touchscreen phones. Any game devs working on something that can be played with a d-pad and 4 buttons, get yourself one of these and have a gander at PortMaster, this is a niche thing right now but it's taking off Real Fast.

Personal games console with proper controls for <$50 feels like ZX Spectrum levels of revolutionary

Reddit, outage, silly

Reddit team pulling a 3D chess move, by pulling the whole site down so reddark lists no specific sites as being down (because none of them can be polled to check).

reddit

I guess reddark can replace the entire page with "all of Reddit is down" now lmao

The only good anti-homeless architecture is a home 😤

So apparently r/programming went dark without warning, despite being moderated by spez, the Reddit CEO

Disabled people asking for accommodations isn't entitlement, nor do they have a "victim complex". They're just asking for help.
