writing emails to professors like

"Dear Sir Prof. Dr. Dr. rer. nat. Lastname, it is with the utmost discomfort that I find the audacity to demand your invaluable attention for such a benign matter; unfortunately though, tackling this issue necessitates skill and experience far beyond the abilities of my humble self. Thus, I plead to your mercy and kindly ask for your assistance, if it is not too much trouble."

and getting replies like

"np here u go, cya"

A reminder to non-Americans: assigning Pi Day to 22nd July is not only more accurate than 3.14 (22/7 is 3.14285), it's also more likely to annoy Americans.

Who has two thumbs and six hundred M3-M5 bolts of various lengths on their workshop floor?

Also a random thing re: accessibility, being able to do things like look at menus ahead of time or see pictures of a space can be REALLY helpful for disabled folks.

Maybe you're now sure ahead of time that you can eat there.

Or you're autistic/have ADHD and need to prepare so you're not overwhelmed when looking at the menu in the environment.

Knowing what to expect in various ways can lower stress of new spaces. #c4l23

re: Automattic criticism

Also if you're thinking of responding to this with something along the lines of "they're just providing a service", then you can fuck right off, I am not interested in abuse apologia

ME: How's it look?

MECHANIC LOOKING UNDER MY IMAGINATION'S HOOD: *wiping hands on a rag* I see your problem. You've been filling this thing up with despair when it's supposed to run on joy.

Ah yes, and of course there's already a couple Tech Dudes who now believe that this problem should be solved with a decentralized network (seemingly without understanding that availability is a thing)

Anything to avoid solving problems on a social level, I guess

Making a downstream patch to golang so you must assign new variables by typing :=)

Sorry everyone, today is canceled. Please go back to bed. Thanks.

capitalism

A particularly frustrating type of capitalism apologia is when you try to explain how it's negatively affecting something, and the other person doesn't understand the finer details/mechanisms, and instead of trying to better understand, they declare that you must be 'naive' and their high-school understanding of capitalism must be right instead

Tech is Bad

I have lost my ability to be excited or happy about new tech developments or projects and I want people up against the fucking wall for stealing my innocent joy in the hope of revolutionary inventions making the world better

Tech is Bad

The four stages of new technological development under Capitalism:

1. This is a neat toy!

2. This can be used to get rich quick!

3. This can be used to scam people by promising them that they can get rich quick!

4. This can be used to further solidify the unbending domination of our society by a handful of wealth-hoarding idiots who suck our every living moment free of joy so they can fucking sell that joy back to us for a profit

Automation is fun. It's always worth to put some extra hours in doing something automatically. Thanks to that when you need to do it again 3 years later, you will need to automate it again, cause so many things changed, that your automation stopped working.

#automation #it #devops

I need a browser extension to detect news articles that are just "[other publication] reports that..." and automatically take me to the original breaking article so I can see the original quotes and not a rephrase.

The problem with society/political simulation games is that games are difficult to make fun without balancing, and the real world generally isn't balanced

Automattic criticism

A lot of people seem to have a positive view of Automattic (the owners of Wordpress and Tumblr), but uh...

Are you aware that they use predatory business models, and have been doing so for years?

Like how when you want to move your 'free' blog from wordpress.com to somewhere else, they will charge you somewhere in the range of $10-$25 a year for *just a redirect*.

If you don't pay, then you'll essentially lose your entire existing audience when moving, and they'll SEO-drown your new blog in search results unless you shut it down.

None of which you are told in advance.
