do all the folks who do #BandcampFriday know about the new bandcamp union?
Anyway, my uncommon(?) and painful conditioning seems to be that I get dopamine from doing "useful" things, more specifically "useful in the grand scheme of things" and not "good for me".
So, things that are useful include:
- software/web development, if the end thing is deemed to be "useful" itself (e.g. my current clients all provide actual services so are useful, open source stuff is usually useful, crypto shit is decidedly not).
- doing things to be more productive at software development (like making a todo, making computer go faster, getting diagnosed with ADHD, etc).
- doing whatever is wanted of me to not be distracted from useful things.
- cooking nice food for someone else.
- feeding stray cats, sometimes.
- doing dishes or laundry, but only if I'm not in the mood for something *more* useful.
Things that are NOT USEFUL and mentally *painful* include:
- long-term planning of software projects in writing.
- doing anything about my long-term health, like exercising regularly.
- cooking for myself.
- cleaning up my workplace if everything needed still fits.
- accounting (unless threatened by tax office for Nth time)
- literally any potential hobby after twenty minutes or so.
For some of these music or podcasts help ease the pain a bit (dishes were much worse before I got wireless headphones), for others not so much.
A ton of work to be done here, but I'm struggling to convince myself it's useful.
Maybe I should just stop being lazy, lol.
I see the liberals are trying to catch nazis in logical fallacies again as some way to triumph over them. Unfortunately, while it might feel good to go "ha! they can't even define what woke actually means!" the thing is that it doesn't matter to them
The right doesn't care if it lacks definitions or if it's hypocritical or even contradictory. "Woke" is just their dog whistle for "people we want to exterminate" that they can say without being perceived as "not being rude", something the liberal establishment seems to care more about than the underlying sentiment
Saying "you can't even define woke" is about as effective as saying "the president is not named Brandon". It doesn't matter. The important thing is that "let's go Brandon" gives them social cover that "fuck the president" doesn't
Stop asking nazis to define woke and start telling them that you know they want to commit genocide and you'll fight them
Your insipid word games aren't going to beat fascism
Dyspraxia isn't just accidentally clicking or tapping twice, or inserting extra keypresses.
It's holding a control down a fraction of a second longer than you intended when gaming, because you didn't realize you were white-knuckling the inputs with every press.
It's dropping the lid for your insulated coffee mug squarely upon your insulated coffee mug as you go to put it on properly, because you were holding it with just slightly too little pressure.
It's not stopping your elbow or shoulder before it hits a wall or corner or doorframe, because you underestimated the braking force required to stop in time.
It's going to make a gesture with one hand, knowing what gesture it is you want, and yet having your fingers get tangled in each other instead of performing the gesture.
Dyspraxia is, in so many words, real-world janky controller syndrome.
And you can't tell someone has it by looking at them.
Me: I worked in a film photo lab in high school. It wasn't a golden age. It wasn't a great medium to use. It was expensive, bad for the environment and your health. The quality of the photos were limited by your budget. And no, film doesn't have "infinite resolution" because it's analog—the quality of the photo emulsion limits the clarity of the photo, so there's no reason to—
Phone makers: We put AI in your camera so it fills in the details with guesses!
Me: So to set up a dark room you need—
I thought we'd spent the past few years digging into issues and looking for ways to use these systems on problems they can handle, like data and media conversion and modification.
But, no, we're going straight for the dystopian nightmare stuff:
* Knowledgebases that straight up lie.
* Creating an underclass that's only served by mediocre AIs instead of actual lawyers or doctors
* Summarisers that hallucinate _in their summaries_
* Decision-making systems rife with shortcuts and biases
Folks, I encourage you to not work for @OpenAI for free:
Don't do their testing
Don't do their PR
Don't provide them training data

They used to be everywhere when I grew up. And they are still around. The same old ones.
Is this a German thing or do you have these boxes on random buildings where kids can get chewing gum and small toys for a coin where you live too?
I was the "bad" (poor and resourceful and fun) kind of kid who came up with ways to cheat the machines to give me stuff for free.
Okay, taking a few moments to reat (some of) the #gpt4 paper. It's laughable the extent to which the authors are writing from deep down inside their xrisk/longtermist/"AI safety" rabbit hole.
Things they aren't telling us:
1) What data it's trained on
2) What the carbon footprint was
3) Architecture
4) Training method

Question for the #AltText community: What sort of descriptions are considered acceptable for #Weather maps and imagery?
They are often so complicated and chock full of information that it just feels overwhelming. Additionally, things like evacuation maps are time-critical, so we want to post immediately.

Fucking. Hero.
Regarding a deeply harmful transphobic bill that is slated for the current Nebraska legislative session, Sen. Michaela Cavanaugh says:
“If this Legislature collectively decides that legislating hate against children is our priority, then I am going to make it painful — painful for everyone. I will burn the session to the ground over this bill.”

Strong views about abolishing oppression, hierarchy, agency, and self-governance - but I also trust people by default and give them room to grow, unless they give me reason not to. That all also applies to technology and how it's built.
