"Rijkswaterstaat heeft op verzoek van de gemeente Den Haag een deel van de Utrechtsebaan van de A12 vanmorgen besproeid met een hete zoutvloeistof. Die voorkomt dat actievoerders zich kunnen vastlijmen aan het asfalt en zorgt ervoor dat het wegdek niet beschadigd raakt."

Volgens mij lokt de #politie en gemeente #denhaag alleen maar escalatie uit.

TIL that there's something called "Silicon Valley Bank" at the same moment that I learned that every assumption I would have made about something called that would have turned out to have been correct.

Nobody:

Every hotel: *renovates their bathrooms to put in shiny chrome-plated showers more complex than a petroleum processing plant that nevertheless flood water all over the floor*

NL politics, but in English

In case you missed it: the government has sent military police to intimidate climate protesters, as well as a water cannon, and seems to have started arresting people again

meta, grumbly

It's "funny" how in some people's eyes, known bad actors always deserve more benefit of the doubt than the people who block them - "we should wait until it's proven that they're evil"

naming question, software dev

For an API that lets you define the structure of a database, which of these naming schemes is better? It should be clear and *feel* nice and unintimidating to work with.

How come there isn't any game using ActivityPub?

I should probably search for that before asking 👀

Comment on FDIC takeover of SVB

The culture that prides itself on moving fast and breaking things and insisting the government is too slow is now experiencing a government agency that is famous for moving fast and breaking things.

Oddly they seem displeased.

By the way, if you are transgender, and visit Tokyo's famous gay quarter, Shinjuku Nichōme, you should be aware that you are likely to encounter hostility or be flat-out refused entry in MANY lesbian and gay bars. I don't know if things have changed since the pandemic (I certainly hope so), but I had numerous traumatic experiences, even at bars that had previously seemed welcoming. Dorobune is one women's bar that I can 100% vouch for.

Customer: MY NAME IS BROCK AND BROCKLI (BROCCOLI) IS MY NICKNAME.
DMV: BROCOLLI CAN BE ANOTHER WORD FOR MARIJUNA

Verdict: DENIED

I keep seeing academics very excited for some bright and shiny #AI future where like all information self assembles and you can know anything instantly and you write papers by just gesturing at a thought with a couple of sentences and I have no idea how they don't see a) that playing out as them getting further trapped onto extractive platforms, b) not actually going to work even remotely like that and c) that sounds pretty bleak to me even if it did work 100% as intended

had a lot of fun hanging out with Peter Thiel last night over wine. we came up with a goofy idea to short Silicon Valley Bank then induce a bank run by telling all of his startups to withdraw at the same time. thankfully it was just a fun thought experiment to prime us for the cocaine we ended up doing. i don't remember the rest of the night, it's probably fine. now, let me take a big sip of this coffee while I check my Bloomberg terminal and get my day started

Aaaaaand there's the expected terrible take from gargamel

I remember when I was working at Technorati, the first and best blog search engine, and Google announced it was going to do blog search. We said something very similar to this:

mastodon.social/@Gargron/11000

"SVB was also the preferred bank for various giants in the crypto VC world, including Andreessen Horowitz and Sequoia Capital"

lol. lmao.

In the airport there are people wearing masks and people hacking their lungs out, but somehow these are never the same people.
