#wikipedia #transfobia #SocialJustice

Dear younger queers:

It isn't a generational thing

You can't sit back and wait for justice to inevitably come

That's what they want you to do

You will be betrayed by how regressive and reactionary your own generation is

fediblock, long-ish

Heads-up: an official Microsoft account has appeared at dotnet.social/@dotnet

Microsoft has a long and continuing(!) history of "embrace, extend, extinguish", ie. taking over the control and governance of community projects while pretending to be contributing to them out of the good of their hearts.

This strategy is described here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embrace, -- although nowadays variations of this strategy are also used.

Some recent examples of problematic behaviour from Microsoft:
- WSL, which aims to draw developers away from Linux to re-establish their OS monopoly through a one-way 'compatibility layer'
- Their huge investment into OpenAI and its exploitative AI model
- Their monopoly over the FOSS community through Github, a proprietary platform
- Less well-known, Microsoft's previous venture in "exploiting the public commons for AI stuff" actually predates OpenAI; github.com/MicrosoftDocs/intel

Consider blocking accordingly.

To reiterate some of the issues with conferences:
- An entry fee keeps out poor people
- A scheduled conference time keeps out anyone who does not have much spare time (again, especially poor people) or who cannot just decide to do something at a specific time (eg. neurodiverse people)
- Video/audio calls exclude people with auditory processing issues or hearing impairments
- A physical conference excludes both disabled and poor people (for accessibility and travel cost reasons respectively)
- A conference on a proprietary platform excludes anyone who for whatever reason cannot use the proprietary client; this ranges from OS support issues to accessibility issues
- Not to mention all the safety concerns for marginalized people when being forced to interact with others in real-time

Centering your project decisionmaking around conferences means that the only people who can fully participate (and therefore be represented) will be able-bodied, well-off, sufficiently neurotypical, and otherwise privileged.

Metroid Prime full screen static effect texture would require too much memory and GameCube only had 24MB. solution?
texture is generated using the current RAM data which is the game running itself, and it looks like noise. #gamedev

good morning.

before signing up for a service like mastometrics please ensure your instance admins are cool with you using a tool that asks your instance for your last 2,000 toots every hour forever.

free tools aren't necessarily free for everyone.

EDIT: see response here from the service - mas.to/@mastometrics/109994635

Apparently they back off to lower refresh payloads and frequency. they also point out they follow rate limiting, use serial requests, and are opt in per masto account.

Still a very good idea for instance operators to implement a policy on their users' third-party tool usage in my opinion. Being able to see resource usage by account would be a really nice admin tool while I'm at it #mastodev #mastoadmin

This is one of the organizers of FediForum: dazzle.town/ -- ie. the old grift of "we solve surveillance capitalism by letting you sell your personal data yourself and pretending that that makes it magically voluntary"

Oh look, *of course* there's "web3" grifters involved in this fucking thing.

It's literally been like a week since I tooted about how project decisionmaking at a conference means gatekeeping, and now we have an online conference charging admission(??) on a proprietary platform(????) claiming to be all about "making decisions on how to move fedi forward"

This is not how community governance works, people

People talk about dull or menial jobs like they're easy

Ok yes, it's easy to make a coffee or pick a tomato. Now do it 1,000 times. Do it every day. Do it with people yelling at you. Do it in the cold. Do it while you're sick.

Just because the task is easy doesn't mean the job is

This is currently a half formed/reactive/grumpy thought - but here goes

I value precision and clarity in communication. I'm not perfect at it, my most common error is failing to include enough context. I'm a work in progress, I'm still trying to improve.

I cannot emphasise how much I do not want LLMs in my corporate communication tools

suicide, tech ethics, "ai"

There are so many people and institutions I am disgusted with --- basically everyone connected to that heinous thing. Facebook, Discord, Tumblr, and Telegram all directly compromised their users by giving them over to this "study," the IRB at Stony Brook rubber-stamped this atrocity, not to mention the "non-profit" itself.

What in the absolute hell is wrong with people that they think this is even remotely OK?

Does anyone here have any knowledge in laptop BIOS modifications? More specifically for an ASUS TUF laptop. I need a fix for a major issue my laptop has that ASUS themselves will not support.

@cadey This blog post is great, especially because of the "This code is free as in mattress."
