Please suggest: instances with non-white admins or mods
I would like to be able to make recommendations to BIPOC who have been scared off by the (non)moderation of mastodon.social and some of the other bigger instances.
If you know of an instance where there are non-white people who are doing the moderation (and also that the moderation is good) please let me know.
Thank you, comrades! <3
Minecraft tech help question
Minecraft won't launch. I backed up .minecraft and tried reinstalling. The launcher hangs forever at "Cleaning up". No obvious errors in the logs but can paste them up somewhere if anyone thinks that'll help.
KDE neon 5.26, Linux kernel 5.15.0-52
#minecraft 🐘
Does anybody have like, an actual LIST of known-good instances with decent moderation and not of full of chuds (nazis/terfs/swerfs/etc.), that are accepting new users?
(For sharing with users who are currently stock on mastodon dot social or w/e)
boosts appreciated, also if there's a hashtag that obviously goes with this kind of question let me know
Blackface, police, intimidation of protesters
In the toot above 👆 I'm replying to is a link to youtube video of a violent group in blackface that are targeting antiracism protesters in the netherlands on their way to protest blackface. Video is a collection from various sources about what happened.
The police stood by and didn't intervene to 'avoid escalation'
The netherlands is a racist cesspool
This story with Tracy Chou, an engineer who specifically works on creating tools to stifle organised harassment online, getting posts removed from mastodon.social because of "reverse sexism/racism," is maddeningly infuriating.
We know that Mastodon's flagship instances have been having issues with moderation for a while, but this seems to point that the trend has gone from "ineffective absent moderators" to "moderators protecting the feelings of white men," which I think will backfire. It also validates every criticism the fediverse receives for being a bastion of tepid, neoliberal, unexamined racism-as-reflex whiteness.

To echo Tracy Chou's bannable offense: I also heavily recommend reading more books by non men, by non white people, and by non cisheterosexual people. What a violent ideology! Tabarnouche.
Heads up folks: if you use spelling tactics that help to prevent getting hassled by trolls or mods on the other sites, such as spelling "Rump" as "R*mp," all that accomplishes here is messing up people's individualized filters for their personal curation needs.
Just spell the word/name/curse from the deep. The filters will do the work. #feditip
A long time ago, I wrote a site called ConRoomies. It has proven to be pretty popular for furries finding roommates for cons.
Unfortunately, it was built in the height of the Web 2.0 login craze, and its only way of authenticating is with a Login with Twitter button. Oooops.
Well, it has given me the opportunity to do some much needed engineering work that really should have been done years ago anyway.
Just another reminder about putting all your tech eggs in one basket.
@sam god I wish I could triple boost this.
People with “Twitter experience” seem to not realise that _the point_ of Mastodon is explicitly not the same as that of Twitter.
Mastodon centres safety, intent, and humans. Not numbers. Not engagement. Not any of the goals of Twitter.
The design that worked for Twitter is not what will work for Mastodon because they’re not shooting for the same goals.
Design is also about saying no to some things. Even if users “want them”.
re: meta, Hachyderm, FediBlock
To clarify: it's not that Hachyderm *only* contains this sort of thing, there is definitely a mixed population. But *every* time I see this stuff it is from either Hachyderm or m.s, and that's not good.
meta, Hachyderm, FediBlock
The more I read conversations between Hachyderm users, the more the whole instance starts to look like a threat to the community to me, honestly.
Why is everybody over there constantly talking about marketing strategies and pivoting and onboarding of brands like fedi is some exciting new resource to exploit?
They still don't seem to realize that they are talking about people's metaphorical living rooms instead of some corporate platform, and repeatedly violating any concept of consent in the process.
That apparently the admin decided *not* to retract the "let's invite corporations" plan does not exactly help either...
I'm inclined to call this a #FediBlock recommendation, but receipts-wise I don't know that I want to call out any specific users, considering that this seems to just be the vibe of the whole instance, and it's not exactly very hard to find.
Hey, friends: If you're still on mastodon.social or mastodon.online, you're about to lose track of weirder.earth, and other servers to follow soon. It's for the safety of our comrades: this is the quieter, kinder part of the fedi where we walk away from instances that can't or don't control harassers.
I know a lot of you still on mastodon.social and .online are newcomers who landed there because so many other instances have closed to new accounts. Please take this time to explore the fediverse and find somewhere with more reliable moderation. The move-instances tool works pretty well these days!

- No alt text (request) = no boost.
- Boosts OK for all boostable posts.
- DMs are open.
- Flirting welcome, but be explicit if you want something out of it!
