Did you know the InterCity 225 is retrofitted with eink reservation displays?

If you pay for a single from Apple Music, you get an m4a that doesn't contain album art.

But when I play it in the Apple Music player it has album art.

No. It doesn't. They do a lookup of the album art in the Music player. The actual file doesn't have the album art.

You'll need to steal their album art from somwhere else, and then run:

ffmpeg -i input.m4a -i image.jpg -c copy -disposition:v attached_pic output4.m4a

Purchasing music is such pain these days :neobot_facepalm: I've been trying to purchase music from all my favorite bands for days now, and it's so spread out across so many platforms, if you can even download it at all, and then even if you do, you're not guaranteed all the bells and whistles of what makes a song recognizable in your mp3 player or app. You still need to do stuff yourself.

I want to tell people to do the right thing and purchase music, but jfc, this is an unfederated segmented shitscape...

something that'd been bothering me a lot about #DGS is that *none* of the 3 dictionaries I use has any Middle East cultural words. no words listed for such things as Ramadan, halal, hijab etc. I know how to sign schnitzel, currywurst, baguette, sushi, but when our migrant kindergarten teacher asked how to say falafel, teachers were like, uh dunno fingerspell it.

I mean I don't blame the teachers for not knowing a word, but the vocab gap in the *dictionaries* is blatant. spreadthesign which is by far the most comprehensive free one doesn't even have döner. what is life in Germany without döner??

(gebärde lernen has it at least: gebaerdenlernen.de/vid/doener. )

that I know how to ask if something is vegetarian or vegan, but not kosher or halal, makes me feel icky. I tried using spreadthesign for Syrian sign to find loanwords, but not knowing Arabic limits my ability to look...

This :rrreis: bus from Arriva has their newest version of the passenger information system and it shows the exact distance in meters until the next stop. It is actually quite ridiculous.

Folks who are new to protesting:

Never sign up for protests online. Never organize online. Just show up the day of with your sign, comfy clothes, and wont-cry-if-you-lose-it water bottle. If you've already signed up, don't do it again.

If you're worried, bring a minute flip phone and write your lawyer's number on your arm.

Random "don't protest/surrender now" commenters will be quashed.

COMBAT THE FASCIST LINE

🪭easier to say we are “weak” to explain why we struggle to get lasting shit done! It’s a comforting thought, isn’t it, that *you* are safe in whatever country you might be in because *we* just aren’t trying hard enough.

Convenient to blame people fighting the system from within *the imperial core*, which is *the* most secure place in the empire, for failing to overthrow the empire.

Imagine it was Star Wars, and you are on Alderan, and as the Death Star laser charges up you say “those people on coruscant need to do more”

Yes. Stormtroopers are swarming the place. Money extracted from a million worlds is flowing into the surveillance and security apparatus. The worst people in the galaxy live here and they are willing to pay well to keep it locked down tight.

And yet irl, unlike in star wars, the US seems like it’s on the verge of being burnt to the ground by its own population at all times.

Huh. Maybe the rebels here are *doing a good job* 💛

COMBAT THE FASCIST LINE

🪭do you need proof the us left is strong?

1- even with an anti-trans fascist in charge and 4 years of relentless legal attacks, some places here have some of the best legal protections for transgender people in the world

2- we regularly talk, publicly and openly, about awful genocides the United States has done. This isn’t socially acceptable in many other places

3- we publicly resist every awful thing they do

4- we raised such a stink over the genocide in Gaza here that they are disappearing people to kill the movement

5- 10% of the country was out in the streets in 2020. George Floyd’s death sparked an *international* anti-cop movement. Yet again, they had to go around rounding people up to kill the movement. Police stations were burned to the ground, remember?

6- despite having the most anti-labor and pro-capital government on earth, we’ve still been unionizing. Did you not notice all the strikes over the last 4 years?

And no. It hasn’t been enough

like, okay, imagine money is invisible. you can't see it. no-one can see it. what does society look like? and looking at it like that, does it even matter how many digits Jeff Bezos's net worth has? that's not the difference between him and you.

we used to say capitalism does evil things so they have slightly higher profits this quarter, but we're realizing that it seems more like capitalism does evil things so laborers are kept powerless.

like, we heard a story as a kid from someone who used to work in a bank, about the person in charge of the copy room - absolute badass, had a whole system to cycle through picking up documents, did a lot of routine repairs on the machines.

copy room person asked for a raise. got given notice, instead.

the college student they hired to replace her got paid more than she did.

so did the next two college students they hired, because just one new employee couldn't keep up with what she could do.

so, why did they spend over three times as much? it's obvious. because they would rather do that than let her ask for a raise. than let laborers have that much power.

it's not about money. capitalists are covetous but it's not about that. it's about power.

For an example: Reticulum would be something that might be on the list. So might alternative firmware to revive old abandoned devices. Or tools for organizing things in a communal living setting.

In #spoonieTown people understand, and value, comfortable silences.

In #spoonieTown most days are misty in the morning, and sunny in the afternoon. Much of the time can be spent working quietly in the garden, writing, painting, reading, and resting and nobody cares if you feel like wearing holey old blue jeans, or if you don't make much money. Life is quiet and peaceful with enough space to rest and think.

Kinda been long enough now to where I don’t feel uncomfortable saying that GitHub and Microsoft explicitly delayed (through a ton of procedural actions and “safety” concerns) rolling out support for pronouns for welllllllllllll over a year despite the many, many, many explanations and comments from LGBTQ staff requesting otherwise.

we really need something like f-droid but for browser extensions.

specifically the reproducible builds part where you can verify the source code is the same as the actual extension you install.

Is there any list of "tech for a hostile world" anywhere? :boost_requested:

Not specific lists like "made in EU" or "privacy-friendly" or "decentralized" or whatever, but an aggregrate list of tech that's likely to be of use in an environment or world where you need to ensure your safety in some way, and build community with others to survive.

(If the listing criteria are entirely technically-oriented and don't take into account social factors, it's not what I'm looking for. Please check for this *before* recommending something.)
