People don't fear technology, they fear what capitalism might do with it.

@luna I think it's valid to examine how this is disproportionally to the benefit of corporations and governments. They'll make sure we have memory safe DRM, memory safe back doors, and memory-safe regressive laws; and we'll keep getting hit by memory safe ad-network attacks, memory safe social engineering, and memory safe bulk data selling.

I don't want to live in the fully automated memory safe global crapitalism police state.

memory unsafety may cause a lot of software crashes, but it also helps a lot of people jailbreak their game consoles, so, it;s impossible to say if its bad or not,

@luna Honestly, this. Safety isn't neutral, especially when so much of tech treats users as the threat to be defended against.

I'm still pro-Rust, but I do think there's a nuance to what's meant to memory safety that gets missed in a lot of Discourse™.

This is not exactly news, but I should maybe say it explicitly: I do not have any remaining faith in the project pulling itself back together governance-wise.

There's been a consistent lack of urgency in addressing the increasing mountain of governance crises, some of them created by core developers(!), and that tells me that any formal solutions will *at best* be implemented reluctantly.

Any actual meaningful positive change is going to come from things organized outside of the formal structures in the project, like forks and specialist groups.

The massive disparity between what managers and politicians think of “AI” and how rubbish everybody else thinks it is, continues to boggle the mind

It’s hard to think of a more concrete demonstration that tech is an oligopoly that doesn’t need to worry about competition or customer demand

i often lament that people don't share show posters on mastodon (all the vancouver punks are still just on instagram...), but i admittedly haven't been great at posting here either. so i'm gonna change that. perhaps it'll start dragging the music scene people off the big tech platforms.

Nix 🤡 fork

The “not-a-fork”[sic] fork of Nix has decided to go ahead and take over the next major version number out of the hands from the official Nix package, and from there, take over the mindshare of the version 3.0.

What the actual fuck?

This is effectively a hostile takeover of the Nix name. Nix 3.0 will surface the “not-a-fork”[sic] fork.

They will surely be using the excuse that it's “Determinate Nix”, which is a different name. But in practice, you know how it is. They are polluting the mindshare with their “not-a-fork”[sic] fork.

Also, this is absolutely 100% a fork, even though they say it's not.

This is a fork that has made the current state of Flakes stable. A major fork in the road. Either Nix will have to become "incompatible" with the stability “promises” from the “not-a-fork”[fork], or bow down to what Determinate Systems decides for compatibility, for their future.

I guess it's a good time to jump over to Lix, for anyone who hasn't done so. It work just fine with NixOS.

Hopefully we'll have a statement from the Nix project regarding this.

Wat heb ik toch een schijthekel aan berichtensystemen die gewoon alle newlines eruit knippen, waardoor alles van meer dan drie zinnen compleet onleesbaar wordt.

Looking at you, MijnGezondheid.

Wat gek, dat DigiD de status van mijn niet-bestaande rijbewijs niet op kan halen.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Determinate Nix, is in fact, a hostile proprietary fork of Nix by its former project lead, or as I've recently taken to calling it, Dix.

Did you know that there is a 1:1 scale replica of the world-famous #Shibuya Scramble intersection that can be rented by TV and film productions located 80 km northwest of Tokyo in the city of #Ashikaga? The real intersection is so busy that nobody can close it down for controlled filming.

This set was notably used in the hit Japanese TV series Alice in Borderland.
