i joined verdi (one of the big unions in germany) (eventhough i don't really agree with them politically on many levels, they do some important stuff and there aren't many other options) and now I'm finding out they offer a lot of useful services to members that i didn't really know about before.

For example they have consulting on doing your taxes or on dealing with landlords, and help you with your communications with Jobcenter/Arbeitsagentur when you're unemployed.

I said "huh they really should advertize this stuff more" and then ellie told me that i should post about it so maybe others who don't know about this stuff can be helped by it so here we are

join a union, they're useful and good for you, and if you don't need the services then your money helps to provide them for those who do!

"People can learn how to navigate and use unfamiliar things just fine" is true but you do actually need to do the teaching part, and not just expect people to magically infer things from first principles (and this also applies to technical terminology)

the reason that programmers are so elitist is because we lack proper labor unions, so our job security is based mainly on gatekeeping the skills necessary to do our job. there i said it

Ok people so last weekend I tabled at a zine fest in Nebraska with like 25 vendors. The state is overwhelmingly Trump country and Omaha has a Republican asshole mayor and a Republican asshole congressperson. The organizing crew was 4 people. They bought a bunch of kn95s cheap in bulk. They put masks required on all their promo materials. They rotated duties so there was always one person standing at the door to the pertinent area next to the welcome table (the rest of the building did not require masking) and simply handed masks to anyone coming in who wasn't already wearing one.

The event lasted 5 hours and was attended by hundreds of people. In my estimation, 99%+ of people were masked up. It was busy the entire time. I made a lot of buxx and made a lot of good connections. It was rad. A lot of people expressed their appreciation for the masking, and I personally heard no complaints. Shoutout Alt Pub Omaha.

NASA's switch to Linux in space was driven by reliability, flexibility, and security concerns. In 2013, NASA announced that all laptops on the ISS would transition to Debian, a Linux-based operating system, to improve stability and control over software.

This change wasn’t just about reliability. Windows was much more vulnerable to malware, and in 2007, a worm named W32.Gammima.AG spread to the ISS. With Linux, NASA gained the ability to modify and customize the system for mission-critical applications without depending on proprietary software. Today, Linux powers much of NASA’s space infrastructure, from ISS systems to Mars rovers and beyond.

Don't censor or cuteify words like nazi or names like Elon Musk and Donald Trump.

Cute euphemisms or replacements may be necessary on centralized platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, Insta, YouTube, etc. It's not necessary here and it harms understandability.

You can — and should — just call racism racism and racists racist. A wider number of people will be able to accurately understand what you're saying if you just use the right words.

Using the actual names of people at least once per post lets people decide when and where they're going to read whatever vile horseshit various people are up to. It harms no one. It's just good practice.
