politics nazis ww2 ref

accurate record keeping made it way too easy to establish who relates to who and what religion they were during the nazi occupation of the netherlands in ww2

yeah, uh, we have opinions on keeping too much information in government records, like uh, just don't please, kthnx

in ww2 several actions of resistance and military had to be specifically aimed at destroying the records that shouldn't exist to begin with.....

thought people had learned this, but here we are

A lot of CSS hackery later, and I've managed to construct a popover dialog using a <details> element that doesn't disrupt the button order and also doesn't require any JS to work!

when will websites discover than you can set session cookies for longer than a week so users don't get logged out all the fucking time

folks on the fedi like to make a big deal out of how we're better than google, better than facebook, etc, but in terms of the basic act of respecting consent by looking at things like robots.txt we're far worse

:smh: https://www.fediral.com/bot claims to respect robots.txt, but after fetching robots.txt it goes to .well-known/nodeinfo and nodeinfo/2.0 anyway, even though it's not permitted to do so

and what the hell is 'fediral' you ask? who fucking knows, the website is empty: https://fediral.com/

Apparently people are being made to do Game Jams as part of marked assignments at university now, which just seems 100% counter to the point of game jams to me.

IMO, you are typically supposed to whip together something quick and scrappy and experimental in a game jam, maybe you'll build it into something bigger afterwards, but the point is to get used to producing finished works and to network/exchange critique with your peers.

Also, the stakes are typically very low during a game jam. Sometimes there are prizes but it's not like making a bad jam game will affect the rest of your life (unless you choose to make something morally repugnant).

If you are being marked on it for an assignment you are just doing coursework. This isn't a game jam. You are just doing project work. Call it that instead. If the rest of your life could be negatively impacted by poor performance in this activity, this is not a Game Jam! Stop trying to make work *sound* fun!

Today for #blackhistorymonth , let us honor Jerry Lawson, video game hardware innovator and inventor of the video game cartridge.

Jerry, gamers everywhere salute you 🫡

It looks like the #50501protests mostly went well and were a positive experience for everyone, despite my misgivings. I’m glad to be wrong about this one!

Hopefully this engages new people in the work going on around them. And these folks start using Signal groups instead of Discord to organize LOL.

Call for anti-fash zines

Hey y’all. I’m gonna get my local print shop hippies to print a bunch of anti-fascist #zines.

Please send relevant zines my way!

I live in a college town with a strong zine culture and a zine distro box in downtown. I can only do so much as an exhausted crip, but I hope getting info into the hands of students, workers, unhoused folks, etc will make a larger difference.

active spam exploration

i admit i have continued to "play" the spam games that i have no word for as a category except "mobile games that are designed to be highly addictive and have a very strong advertising presence everywhere."

i am doing an "only choose the ad play option" playthrough (by pressing the ad button on my phone periodically while it's on the other side of my desk), and even though i think most of the leaderboards and etc. on these games are fake, i am almost at the top of the fake leaderboards by just being like "i actually love ads please show me ads"

It is once again time to give thanks to Brian Fox, the Black American programmer that has given us BASH and echo! Thank you for your INCREDIBLE contributions to open source software, Unix, and Linux. It literally would not be the same without you. BASH is still absolutely foundational to all computing today. Happy Black History Month to an absolute icon!

Sounds like the gts garbage stats has done the trick and robots.txt support is coming to fedidb

Just as a small step to stop normalizing current fascists:
Do not ever - even ironically - title anything "Make X Y again". Don't give further power to those memes and (TBH inherently conservative) modes of thinking about the world.

Pet peeve about SA ment

Cis guys love to use "rape" as a term for what humans do to objects or organizations or abstract concepts... So many living breathing human beings have sexual trauma, could we use like any other word? It's not such a casual thing for those of us who have experienced it, and using it to refer to something happening to a non-living thing feels ironic in a bad way

If you're at all interested in the technology behind rollercoasters, I strongly recommend youtube.com/@ThemeParkScienceO - the videos are in Dutch, but most of them have English subtitles available (proper ones, not machine translation).

Hey fedi!

I'm curious about these patterns they put on train windows these days. How do they look like? Are they all the same? The one I post here is from a Desiro HC at DB Regio Bayern — are there other patterns on other trains? If you know others, I'd love to see pictures of them!

It's pretty easy to find out information about the pattern's function (search for "siemens mobilfunkdurchlässige scheiben", you'll find some pdfs), and that implies some constraints for the precise pattern — how wide the lines can be, how large/small the cells, it should repeat, etc.

but i've not found any public information on why they choose any particular pattern. Is it just aesthetics? Some manufacturing consideration? If you just need a repeating pattern of a certain size in a grid, why choose one which has so many additional symmetries?

Unfortunately I don't travel nearly enough to check all new train classes equipped with these — but I'm sure collectively people one here are on most of them. So if you're bored on your next train ride or just otherwise have the time, and you notice such a pattern, please send me a picture & note on which train class you found it?

(also feel free to boost this!)
