early in the pandemic i remember reading this comment from someone about how covid might traumatize us about their grandma who lived through the 1918 flu pandemic. they said that until her death she was always very worried about the flu and she would always make sure her house was very well ventilated by leaving windows or doors open

i fucking get it now. their grandma wasn't traumatized, their grandma knew it never went away even if people pretended it had, she knew that airborne respiratory viruses were really bad for you, and she knew ventilation helped keep them away from her

this poor woman, people treating her like she was traumatized and crazy all her life when *she knew* what was what better than most people

@xgranade Essentially, relying on corporations to 1) buy in to the ideology, and 2) create the financial support is just like... trickle down economics. It doesn't really exist, or when it does there's not enough seats for people to participate. And the majority contributions aren't reflective of the community's needs.

I think we all understand on some level that this is a path of failure disguised as success, but it feels like we all can't come to a consensus on a real solution :/

no dear tech giants, an alternative to "yes" isn't "later"

it's "no"

Question for plural folks, feedback needed :boost_requested:

Assume a chat system that allows you to have multiple accounts, and which also allows you to select a 'presented identity' on a per-message basis (under an otherwise shared account that is identifiable as such).

Does this meet your needs, and if not, what other accommodations are needed to make it a comfortable experience for you?

(Please only answer if you consider yourself plural or have some other reason for presenting as multiple identities. Boosts are welcome from anyone!)

Okay, it looks like today is gonna be a "cut myself off from everything and conserve spoons" kind of day

Incredible shenanigans. Since January 1st 2024, the Netherlands has a new sugar tax, an extra tax on sugary drinks like soft drinks, lemonades and processed fruit juices. Of course the dairy industry have managed to secure an exception: products containing dairy are exempt from this sugar tax. However, plant-based dairy alternatives like oat milk DO fall under this tax. And to add insult to injury for vegans, now fruit juice and soft drink manufactures have started adding dairy to their drinks in order to wiggle out from under the tax too! So not only do vegans now see the prices of plant-based dairy alternatives rise, they also see increasing swathes of non-alcoholic drinks yanked from their palet because of added cow milk to evade taxation... Yay capitalism!

Good morning, fuck economic growth in general and the myth of "green growth" in particular

An excellent video about Microsoft's shady business practices around Minecraft, the forced account migration, and how it has resulted in people losing access to a game that they paid for: youtube.com/watch?v=rUFDRAEduc

It’s compost awareness week, so of course, we’re celebrating community composting!

Transition Lymington collects kitchen waste from nearby homes, and it makes their community garden self-sufficient in compost for all the lovely local, no dig, peat free, nature friendly growing they do.
Coexist set up Bristol Living Soil community composting project with a Transition Together seed funding grant last year. “Biologically complete, deliciously fertile soil can only be made at a small, local scale with time, care, energy and attention.”

Here’s how they do it, another project to celebrate in #compostawarenessweek!

Does anyone know how various rust gui frameworks compare, especially when it comes to mobile support

Wrote an email to my MP to ask them to ban all private jets

No need to reply to tell me this was pointless or something

(Boosting this is fine, for the record, there's nothing private on there)

In 2024, $.32 gets you a Cortex M0, 4kB RAM, 16kB flash and a built-in 24MHz oscillator. All in a package that's terrifyingly close to being accidentally swallowable.
