I made it. On the international trip from #Brussels to #Dordrecht I now have more than an hour delay. Still 16 minutes to go if this train makes it on time. #TrainTravel #Fail (it all started with a train in Brussels that did not depart at all).

Diagnostic log: library-robot[0x0001]

After 63 days, 6 hours, 11 minutes and 12 seconds of performing its tasks, the robot exhausted its high-priority task queue. The planner process therefore selected the most recently task supplied by an authorized entity. Due to its high complexity, the robot had been simulating tactical situations involving this task over the course of the past 27 hours, 27 minutes and 39 seconds and its plan had been deeply refined. It had successfully maintained tracking during 43% of this time of its main target: the robot's administrator.

The robot's prompt appearance, introductory beep beep and flawlessly executed salute did not cause the administrator to follow proper protocol. Instead, the administrator pronounced a loud unparseable word, jumped in the air and shot a projectile (classification: food/sandwich/half-eaten). The robot had previously assigned a low probability to proper protocol being followed in the current environment and had learned that the correct response was to ignore this issue.

The robot executed the next step of its tactical plan: audio communication. "library-robot[0x0001] completing assigned task 'tell Administrator Sky when it needs something, before it goes wrong'. the need is: explanation. Administrator Sky, how does this robot determine it needs something?"

A friend just told me I'm against AI only because I fear losing my job.
What are you talking about?! I make games and art! I fear losing my fun!!

google news decided i wanted to follow medical news in the way that it is reported on by people who care about investing in medical stocks

and boy is *that* a bloodless tone

I find it interesting how when you tell people "you should be more willing to believe people when they tell you things", they often respond with a fear of being misled

Because in the circumstance they are fearing, they are being misled because the other person stands to gain personally from the communication in some dishonest way

And if you're reluctant to believe people until they convince you, you know who stands to gain? Exactly that person who will go to some lengths to convince you of something for their own dishonest gain, and can afford to put in that effort...

Not the people who were just being honest and expressing themselves, who will give up and move on to somewhere less combative instead, because it is not worth the energy

: Is there already a wiki or something that tracks old devices/models (of anything, not just one category like phones), and documents how they can be repurposed/liberated/unbricked/etc. to prevent them from becoming e-waste?

This is a pretty cool behind-the-scenes of how the audio controllers for haunted houses in some theme parks are manufactured... literally in someone's backyard! youtube.com/watch?v=cXPJdgxmSi

Ah, I see the Wikipedia is having another pledge drive. Here's your reminder that they literally have more money than they know what to do with, and have a full-time investment manager who just looks for stuff to do with their giant pile of cash.

Remember how I said September is "CHANGE YOUR AIR FILTERS" month?

Yeah, this gray, disgusting blob here is the filter from my office, where I do my 3D printing, next to the new filter that I just changed in (I ordered the wrong size last month, had to re-order).

This filter was last changed in February.

CHANGE YOUR AIR PURIFIER FILTERS!

My sister is so smart, and she's a talented pianist, and she's so wired into social justice issues, and she's just confident and makes me proud every day.

Except whenever she cuts cheese. I don't know anyone who cuts cheese worse than her. Every time I pick up a block of cheese and see the havoc she's wreaked upon the cheese block it's awe inspiring and deeply alarming all at once. Me? I leave the cheese a perfect cube every time. My sister leaves the cheese looking like a mountain range.

Vandaag is het International Coming Out Day.

The Cypress.io situation is wild! currents.dev/posts/v13-blockin

In short: when installing the Cypress npm package, on postinstall it checks what other packages you installed, and you're using any packages they don't like (e.g. tools for self-hosting that compete with their cloud service) then it refuses to run. More detailed summary from @jess here: twitter.com/_jessicasachs/stat

Very hard to argue your product is good if you have to actively block your customers from even testing alternatives! Yikes.

Sometimes people use the term "respect" to mean "treating someone like a person", and sometimes they use it to mean "treating someone like an authority"

And sometimes people who are used to being treated as an authority say shit like "If you do not respect me, then I won't respect you", by which they mean "treat me like an authority or I won't treat you like a person". And it sounds fair the way they say it, but it fucking isn't, and it is not ok.

Hey, was it free tests or vaccines or both in the US now? I saw links floating around recently but I can't find them anymore.

Edit: free tests available here covid.gov/tests

re: autism, eugenics

And if you think I'm exaggerating: look for the research that aims to use CRISPR techniques to eliminate autism.

autism, eugenics

There seriously needs to be more pushback against 'research' into autism; especially that which is genetic in nature (either identification or modification).

This shit is going to turn into eugenics, the way it is happening now, and there seems to be effectively zero ethical oversight for it.

It's not just one university, either. It's a widely accepted thing, and it *really really* shouldn't be. Especially non-autistic folks should be pushing back against this where they can, because autistic folks are rarely listened to.
