Imagine if you could rapidly detect COVID-19 in public places by testing the air. Now you can! Researchers have developed a groundbreaking new air monitor that can detect the presence of an infected person in as little as 5 minutes. (1/3) 🧵

Meta/Facebook meta, naming convention rant
The name we give threads.net is yet another way Facebook is being given special consideration, in addition to its abysmal record which would disqualify ANY other instance from the moderated parts of the fedi. Why does threads.net get to be called by its brand name, which many have pointed out is a corporate overreach of mindshare, instead of its full domain name like, oh, idk, every other goddamned instance?
No instance gets to be just Mastodon, even mastodon dot-fucking social gets abbreviated to .social and mastodon.art gets to be .art at best. They don't get to be Social or Art, and threads.net doesn't get to be #Threads either.
Why not call it #ThreadsNet or #ThreadsDotNet? Maybe #InstaThreads? Do it to push back at the corporate grab at the linguistic commons. Do it to flex on Mark Zuckerberg. Do it for the poor fiber artists who can't get proper filters. C'mon.
No, recruiters.
I do not want to be part of a "challenging" team.
I'm in my mid-50s. I want to be part of a "mature" team, a "powerful" team with a large and well-managed "throughput", a "structured" team that knows how to use processes to quickly and accurately handle the Same Stuff Happens Every Week so that when someone else comes screaming in with their ass on fire babbling about something someone else broke and We Need To Document This Thing NOW NOW NOW, one or two of us can calmly turn from our current tasks, neatly and quickly handle La Emergencia, and calm the panicked person's heartrate without raising our own.
I'm old. Fuck "ambition". I just want a good paycheck and no dumbass "this REALLY could have been avoided" hasslepanic.
I know, the Memory tool 💾 can look quite intimidating.
But, hear me out!
If you're looking for a memory leak, record 2 snapshots, and use the comparison feature. This helps focus on what changed only and filters out the noise! 🤫

Did I ever tell you all the time I broke a teacher's heart?
When I was first starting being self-employed I was very much still getting used to the feast-or-famine nature of self-employment. There was a fantastic temp agency around the corner from me where I'd pop in for a day or two here and there when things were slow. One day I goes in and they're like "Alright Dan, want another Very Temp do you?" I said aye. They say "Got just the thing, covering a sickness, you'd be a cleaner, ten quid an hour but it's just for today and tomorrow, that alright?" I said brilliant, that was frankly great money for casual work at the time and I don't mind hard and messy, so long as it's not the meat industry I'll try owt for a day or two at a stretch until some more work comes in. They say can you start right now?
What, RIGHT now? Aye, no worries, where am I going? Oh it's just around the corner, it's the high school. I'm like oh aye, I'm vaguely familiar with the place, having attended there meself for six years of high school and two of sixth form.
So off I go round the corner and say hey you rang for a cleaner, the regular cleaning staff say aye, grab a mop and have fun.
So Mrs - not gonna tell you her real name obvs, let's call her Mrs Glompy - Mrs Glompy, my old business studies teacher, bumps into me in the corridor and I say "Oh hello Mrs Glompy, long time no see!" and she gives me this Look.
This Look that goes, clear as a bell, "Christ, you did two years of business studies in sixth form, you showed promise, I know Winsford is what it is and opportunities are scarce but what, Daniel, the hell are you doing here when I poured myself into instructing you in the frank hope that you'd blow this joint and I'd never see you again," but she doesn't say any of that, she just gives me this like Frozen Smile and goes "Oh! Oh, uh, Daniel, what are you doing h...I mean, how are you?"
I stood in front of my childhood mentor with my mop in my hand and said "Oh, brilliant! Really, really well! Christmas were a bit rough like but things are WAY better now."
Mrs Glompy looks at the mop, goes "Oh, good, I'm... I'm glad to hear it."
"I started my own business!"
She nods. "Well. Good luck, Daniel."
"Aye cheers," we part with a friendly smiley nod and it's not until several minutes later that I go "Ohhhhhh"
And then years later I go FFS lady do you think the floors just get clean by magic, look down yer nose at me for having a tidy-up would you, I bet I earned more that afternoon than you did anyway, grumble grumble class war etc
valve if you hire me I will stop sending you really complicated emails about bugs and start receiving them instead
Jesus. My 'liberal' NIMBY-esque neighborhood of Rockridge is starting civilian 'safety' patrols. WTF.
From the Q&A in the local newsletter:
"What will the driver do if they see an incident in progress? - Our drivers' primary duty is to observe, support, report, and when necessary serve as expert witness. When they see unusual activity, rather than make assumptions, they approach the scene in a friendly manner and ask if someone requires assistance before determining the next best response."
I wonder how much time their civilian drivers have spent interrogating their 'assumptions.'

After a trip to visit my parents, who are in their 80s, I want to tell everyone:
Use the 'good' plates and cutlery. Don't save it for later, use it now!
Wear the handmade hat or scarf, someone loved you enough to invest the time in it and it cheers them immensely when it is used.
Visit your favourite places.
Play the music you love.
Ask for what you need, no-one else can read your mind. If you want hard-copy photos, please say so and you will be given them.
On the off chance anyone that follows me knows someone or has been in this situation, my daughter and I rescued a duckling this morning trying to cross a busy main road. We searched both sides where it could have come from, no mom or siblings in sight. I’m striking out on finding any rehabbers who take waterfowl, so if anyone has advice on how to take care of this cutie, if the last place I called won’t take it, I’d appreciate it. Gratuitous pic of a duckling in a cup holder. #duckling #wildlife
