so we've gone from people generally agreeing that google killed XMPP to some spirited debate as to whether that is still true or if XMPP simply killed itself because maybe facebook will like us more if we stop making observations about corporations - I expect that by 2033 we will have people insisting that it was actually XMPP that killed google (google will nevertheless still be alive and well having purchased 65% of congress to make installing an ad blocker a felony in the US)
🥳 Vanaf 19u.
Just a reminder that constantly trying to "debate" each other online just ruins everything. https://sadgrl.online/cyberspace/internet-manifesto #yesterweb #socialmedia #oldweb #indieweb #sadgirl
People user Speaker's Corner as an analogy for social media. It's a corner of Hyde Park. I think it used to really be something, but now it's a bunch of unpleasant people standing on step ladders holding bullhorns and all ranting at the same time, half of them about Jesus. I've seen videos of queers trying this and being harassed. I actively avoid the corner when this is happening.
Anyway, Silicon Valley types saw this mentioned in a book and thought it would be a great model for building community. It's maybe good for rousing rabble, but it's mostly the most irritating men on earth shouting over each other.
people at work all offended or acting like they don't understand why i'm afraid to talk to them
like tell me you haven't dealt w people who have extensive trauma before of COURSE i would be scared of people who hold a lot of power over me, my health insurance, and my paycheck like let's be fucking forreal for one fucking minute
Edit: there is now a mitigation available. It should be safe to use Lemmy again as long as your instance has applied the fix.

Yep, it looks like there is a XSS vulnerability with Lemmy that has been widely exploited, allowing the attackers to steal cookie credentials including potentially those of the site admins.
Some other non-compromised Lemmy instances have taken themselves offline until a fix is available.
Kbin is not affected as far as I can see.
If you have a Lemmy account, don't use it at the moment!

re: politics metaphor
This pondering brought to you by observing *yet another* discussion about Signal where very real problems like "being tied to phone numbers" and "social graph analysis" are being swept under the carpet by any argumentation possible

Strong views about abolishing oppression, hierarchy, agency, and self-governance - but I also trust people by default and give them room to grow, unless they give me reason not to. That all also applies to technology and how it's built.
