I don't think the biggest challenge will be building better fedi-specific tools. It's still so new; we're in the experimentation phase, so there is plenty of room to grow.

The challenge will be helping people understand that they need to invest in their digital independence after being slowly robbed by centralized platforms.

There's an entire generation of people that believe Twitter, Facebook, Google, etc., are the extent of what is possible on the internet.

Breaking that paradigm is critical to shifting the web back to the people. Removing the cap on people's ability to imagine beyond centralized platforms has to be a core priority.

I’m getting better at this! It can be daunting because I never want to ruin a pretty stone, and sometimes things don’t work out. But then I get special ones like this and the transformation just gets me so excited to keep doing more. 🤩

indirect NSFW, alt text

I wish more people would add alt text to their NSFW images. I wanna know just what that fox is doing, how those ropes look, and oooh what's that Lucario up to? Blind people wanna have some fun too.

one of the latest github comments is from another MDN contributor saying it's obviously a terrible idea and it was done without telling the MDN steering committee. so i guess i've caused some fun internal politics problems for some people

mdn added an "ai explain" button to code blocks and i am fucking seething but also trying not to let it leak out too much in this bug report github.com/mdn/yari/issues/920

After a day of running into multiple accessibility barriers while attempting to do multiple online things, I just needed to come here to say thank you to everyone on Mastodon who participates in creating a small corner where I don't feel like an afterthought. I appreciate the dedication to alt text and video descriptions so, so much, and I know many people have already said it, but I don't think it can ever be overstated.

corporate centralization is killing the web. everything we were told would never happen is happening. every hysterical alarmist has proven to have been understating the risks.

Killed by fucking techbros who only care about the newest shiniest thing, and think any sort of backwards compatibility is just "baggage" and of zero value

Well I guess this is gonna be the final nail in the coffin of a dying ecosystem then, huh

And a hearty "fuck you" goes to Deno for deliberately trying to further wreck the JS module ecosystem

I've been thinking about this a lot, actually; how so many games plainly embed extractive and exploitative value systems as a core part of their gameplay and reward cycle, as if it's just the "natural way of doing things", and what that teaches people

I feel like more games should reward the player for not trying to control stuff

us pol

i dont know why folks are still convinced anyone involved in the US gov or will be involved in the US gov is gonna do anything to help anyone other than themselves and the other rich people who give them much money

Bonus round: something that's collaborative/community-driven, so not just FOSS but also actually inclusive and welcoming towards new contributors

(I'm not holding out much hope for this actually existing)

Question: Aaaand the final recommendations request is a probably more tricky one... :boost_requested:

I'm looking for "colony manager" style games (think along the lines of RimWorld) but that *aren't* about actual colonies, fighting natives, and so on, but rather about nurturing a healthy community. Something that *doesn't* encode expansionist values.
