Hey y'all, i know you know this, but while you definitely shouldn't use GPTs for legal research, also don't rely on GPTs for RESEARCH, PERIOD.

They are neither giving nor TRYING to give you intersubjectively associated and derived facts; they are not even remixing factual CONCEPTS into new forms.

They are modelling human biases out into digestible bullshit with a statistically-determined high probability of being swallowed.

That is all.

They don't have to be this way, but, at present, the people making them have no incentive to change them. So. Don't lean on them for fact stuff. It's not what they do.

Like, seriously, I would be *so* happy to have a libp2p that a) isn't knee-deep in cryptogrift shit and b) actually worked as advertised

libp2p is a special kind of frustrating; it's full of good ideas that never come to fruition because of incomplete specs, missing documentation, broken links, module incompatibilities, premature deprecations, bad error messages, ...

Any fedi programs out there default to automatically refuse connections from instances with >10k users?

I don't know of any and it seems like an oversight tbh

Follow up: if you are limiting your participation in public indoor activities, are you considered or do you consider yourself immunocompromised?

Are you limiting your participation in indoor activities in public due to covid?

Trackers are standard across all sorts of web products. But we don’t use them.

So when we needed mapping software to display data collected for a recent investigation, we ran into a familiar problem—our main options all had trackers. How we solved the issue in this week's newsletter: themarkup.org/hello-world/2023

Are you just catching up on the bonkers story about the lawyer using ChatGPT for federal court filings? This is a thread for you.

Anyway, just a reminder that it’s Good to tell people to fuck off if they come to you with bad intentions/motives, no matter how polite they are to your face. These free speech types wanna muddy the water and make it appear Bad to tell them to fuck off. It’s not! Save your energy for something that brings you joy.

These White cosplayers stole an Indigenous language, copywrite it, & are now selling it back to the Indigenous community at exorbitant rates.

They recorded his grandmother speaking & now they are taking legal action to prevent him from accessing the language & *speaking his own language.* He is a language instructor.

LAKOTA LANGUAGE RECLAMATION PROJECT

Lakota elders helped a white man preserve their language. Then he tried to sell it back to them.

“No matter how it was collected, where it was collected, when it was collected, our language belongs to us," said Ray Taken Alive, a Lakota teacher.

i did a funny

nintendo told steam to remove dolphin from their store, allegedly due to it's hardcoded inclusion of the wii common key

so here's a flag that represents the wii's common key, in hexadecimal form :)

EDIT: oops inkscape fucked it up in the export, i fixed it now lol
EDIT 2: fix'd info, everyone was wrong apparantly! doesn't change much but still

meta, politics, centrism

Unsurprisingly, the follower list for the NewsMax account (a fascist media outlet) is a who's who of all the 'centrist' and 'neutral' instances

There's a reason so many marginalized people don't trust centrists and this illustrates it extremely well

I think it's time that I give up on the JS ecosystem.

The CJS/ESM shitshow is clearly never going to get fixed despite the now several years of confusion and compatibility issues, it's become a competition for who can build the shiniest monolithic framework, and not enough people in the JS world even still care about having a public commons to sustain the ecosystem.

The worst part is that there are no plausible alternatives I know of; basically everything else has a *worse* dependency climate. I guess I'll have to focus on my own language/ecosystem project instead.

(This is NOT an invitation to complain at me about npm, node_modules, leftpad, your personal hatred for JS as a language, etc.)

In case you were wondering how IPFS is doing: they deprecated their "old" JS implementation - the one that continues to be proudly advertised on their homepage as "a full JS implementation" - and the new implementation that's meant to replace it hasn't actually reached feature parity yet

TIL that the EU (EPSO) has joined the bandwagon of discriminatory, privacy-invading 'remotely proctored tests':
