U.S. Politics, Anxiety
It genuinely freaks me the fuck out how fascistic this country is becoming. Between all the book banning, the overturn of Roe V. Wade, the continous anti-science rhetoric in regards to COVID-19, and all the queerphobic shit going down in Florida right now. It's seriously hard to believe that this is the same country that touts itself as being "land of the free" which is such a hunk of bullshit if you ask me. I seriously gotta get away from the South quickly by next year.
Heya, we did the thing!
GoToSocial v0.9.0 Spicy Sloth is out now 🌶️ 🔥
This release was fun to work on, and we hope you enjoy using it! The project is slowly and steadily maturing and getting better
Big thank you to all contributors, folks who opened issues, instance admins who let us know weird stuff was happening, people who seem to like the code, and people who give us money to write the code!
You can get the release from here: https://github.com/superseriousbusiness/gotosocial/releases/tag/v0.9.0
Highlights:
PROFILE FIELDS will now be federated. This means you can set key/value fields on your profile, just like other Fedi softwares already have, and they will federate in and out properly! It may take up to 2 days to start seeing fields on remote profiles, be patient ;)
Kickass new layout for web view of profiles, including fields!
Initial support for request tracing (https://github.com/superseriousbusiness/gotosocial/blob/main/docs/configuration/observability.md)
"Subscribe" to an account you follow to receive notifications when they create a new post! (AKA "click the bell" functionality.) Very useful for catching posts of followed accounts who don't post very often.
Automatic remote status refetching to get up-to-date replies + edits.
Performance improvements for message sending: you can now configure the rate at which messages will be federated outwards, better spacing out CPU usage and avoiding issues with rate-limiting.
Lots of caching performance improvements; things should feel generally snappier.
Suspend accounts from right within the admin panel by clicking through from reports.
We added a whole bunch of trans rights to the code 🏳️⚧️ The code has so much trans rights in it now. If you don't like trans rights, you won't like this code.
When you have the experience of fighting bigotry in your own family, the volume of anything outside of that gets turned down a bit.
I'm not gonna lie, it does get scary sometimes. I've physically fought white nationalists before, and don't even get me started about how police constantly use the threat of violence to terrorize communities.
But when you're in the middle, you realize these fools are just people. They are not some powerfully organized civic masterminds that are unbeatable. They are far from that.
And once you've stared down a cop or two with their hand on their weapon, you realize they are more afraid of you.
Get in the habit of being problematic and dangerous because most bigots are cowards at the end of the day.
I told it that there was no Python code in the repository. It told me that I was correct because the code in that repository is C++. I told it there is also no C++. Google Bard again told me that I was correct, this time claiming that the code was Lua. I told it there was also no Lua code in the repository. Google Bard told me that I was correct and that the repository contained Python code.
To be clear, the programming language used in the repository is one made by Google with Google's name in it.
One of the decisive moments in my understanding of #LLMs and their limitations was when, last autumn, @emilymbender walked me through her Thai Library thought experiment.
She's now written it up as a Medium post, and you can read it here. The value comes from really pondering the question she poses, so take the time to think about it. What would YOU do in the situation she outlines?
Oh I walked around a cool accessible path loop in one of the nature reserves we visited while mum was here. It was a walkway with a raised curb on either side for tracking the edge, and then there'd be bumps accross the path whenever there was an info panel on the side, and the panel had braille and audio info on the plants in that part of the path.
I saw a post yesterday on reddit about someone suspecting ADHD (they said they were 17) and how to proceed.
People then basically just told them that they should go to a psychologist and not self-diagnose since they are the expert.
And frankly, as being someone with ADHD I totally disagree with that line of thinking and approach. If you truly feel inside that your life is different to the perceived life of others, do read up, do understand what goes on with you, and share it with your doctors!
How the rail press repeats industry puff...
At the moment LeoExpress owns 5 trains that run. 5.
It tried buying trains from China, but that didn't work, and so the order is cancelled.
The *first* question then to ask of a company saying it will achieve significant expansion is then: with WHAT TRAINS?
Technical debt collector and general hype-hater. Early 30s, non-binary, ND, poly, relationship anarchist, generally queer.
Sometimes horny on main (behind CW), very much into kink (bondage, freeuse, CNC, and other stuff), and believe it or not, very much a submissive bottom :p
Feel free to flirt, but if you want to actually meet up and/or do something with me, lewd or otherwise, please tell me explicitly or I won't realize :) I'm generally very open to that sort of thing!
Further boundaries: boosts are OK (including for lewd posts), DMs are open. But the devil doesn't need an advocate; I'm not interested in combative arguing in my mentions. I am however happy to explain things in-depth when asked non-combatively.
My spoons are limited, so I may not always have the energy to respond to messages.
Strong views about abolishing oppression, hierarchy, agency, and self-governance - but I also trust people by default and give them room to grow, unless they give me reason not to. That all also applies to technology and how it's built.
