GoToSocial (so far) has been trying to maintain compatibility with the Mastodon API, to maximize the number of clients compatible with our ActivityPub server implementation. The Mastodon "base" API implementation is still underway (e.g. we're missing lists), but we have been aware of the fact that maintaining API compatibility with all future features would forever have us in a state of "catch-up".

Given recent announcements about the direction that Mastodon development is being taken, and our own fears about the future of the Mastodon project, we are declaring a cut-off point. GoToSocial will only be attempting to maintain Mastodon API compatibility up to the current stable version, that is, v4.1.2.

Now this does not mean that we will never implement future features of Mastodon, it just gives us more flexibility in exactly what and how we implement things, especially when it comes to the more ethically complex ones (looking at you, search!).

You can make anything look efficient and profitable if there is a social compact to not count some of the costs.

Ah yes this fossil fuel stuff is so energy dense & so cheap. Except for the undrinkable water. Except for the acid rain. Except for the air pollution (and thus the asthma, premature birth and dementia). Except for the wars over it. Except for the climate change. Except for the roads needed to use it to move around. Except for the parking needed for the stuff needed to use the roads

politics, petitions

Your periodic reminder that government petitions are absolutely useless. Yes, even the ones that promise it'll be discussed in parliament or whatever. It'll be superficially "discussed" for 5 minutes and then discarded, to tick the box.

The real purpose of government petitions is to redirect people's anger about harmful policies to an "accountability sink" - something that *looks* like accountability, but really only serves to satisfy people emotionally and sweep the issue under the carpet.

TL;DR: You'll feel like you've "done something", so you won't be an actual threat to the government's position anymore.

You create change by organizing and *demanding* it, with whichever degree of severity is necessary to get there. Not by asking for it.

@flowers
something i wish more Atheists™ would understand is that *their own* communities are expressions of fervent belief just as much as or even more than they are declarations of being about "rational thought" and intellectual superiority.

When disabled students have been active demanding online options be available by default..that UC develop, support, and invest in creative, accessible online options, pointing out that it helps us be more prepared for emergencies anyway, many abled students denigrated that activism.

Today, as Davis experienced a 3rd stabbing incident in a week, the UC Davis sub-Reddit is full of several threads demanding online classes.

We need people to listen to us and join us in activism when we point out that creative, accessible online options must be available by default and that development of them should be fast-tracked for accessibility and *other* reasons. #UCAccessNow #accessibility #a11y

Did you know we have a Github project dedicated to client compatibility issues? We don't have time to investigate all of them at the moment (there are so many Mastodon clients!) but if your favorite client has an issue open in this project, and you feel like taking a look at it... well, that would be cool :)

"Me in 2009: Adulting is way harder than looks, I feel like I haven't gotten any better at this at all. My parents must have really had their shit together.

Me in 2019: The concept of "adulting" is bourgeois propaganda designed to keep us questioning our own worth instead of questioning the absurd inefficiencies and inequalities of the economic structures that govern social relations in our society. Nobody really has their shit together as much as they appear to on the surface, and my parents didn't actually have the slightest clue how to survive outside of riding the wake of the mid-20th century economic boom and not questioning anything too closely."

@deadsuperhero he shouldn't need to be forced and people harmed in order for these changes, somebody with that power in the architecture of a theoretically infinite social space should pre-empt or listen to people pre-empting these situations before they become situations. This is definitely the "too little too late" network for so long as it's one guy at the top is calling all the shots based on whatever works for him. None of this is new problems :ACNH_Sighing:

BlueSky, moderation

Okay, so… choosing a fedi instance is "hard", #BlueSky is "much more easy to use" because there is no need to choose instances, but on BlueSky users will have to choose both the recommendation ("reach") algorithm, and a "community blocklist" (if moderation tools ever materialize in the first place)? 👀

Am I getting this right?

meta, mh-, transmysogynism mention, cw's

i'm a woman and i'm trans and yet i had to put both "women" and "trans" (and every word containing one of these) onto my masto filter list, effectively censoring the existence of ppl like me from my own eyes, bc ppl can't stop posting about transmisia without proper filterable content warnings and bc i panic and spiral (badly) when i'm confronted with this stuff on my own, and idk. it makes me super angry and pissed that ppl's inconsiderableness forces me to censor my own existence from myself. good job self-described "allies", i guess 🙄

in case of emergency

The local newspaper did an article like, what to do if the electricity wouldn't work for a longer period of time.

We're supposed to look at a government website for instructions.

Also, I learned from the same article that the entire internet will probably be offline.

Is there any guide on making surveys trans inclusive? I'm a queer trans enby woman, and I'll admit there's a lot of options. Sometimes one wants to know if a marginalized gender is being over/under represented. Collecting that in a survey helps address that. Is there any ““““official””” (/“prestigous”?) guide I can send to someone?
:boost_requested: #trans #survey #gender

i think things really started going downhill once it became mainstream to say "social media" instead of "a website" or even just "online"

there is nothing ambiguous about "i posted it online" and certainly nothing extra added by "i posted it on social media", except perhaps the oily sensation i get from the latter sentence

we need to stop letting our lexicon be defined by marketers

You are in the position of trying to have a safe work site where you know there is nuclear material and you don't have a Geiger counter and most of the people on the site don't.

So you need strong rules about believing the people who do and reacting when they tell you they are going off, if you wait to hear it yourself well everyone gets a really high dose of something that will sicken your community.

The thing about targeted harassment that should be obvious but that is also easy to miss is that it is targeted.

As a result if you are not a member of the group you are not going to be targeted and you just are not going to see it often and because it isn't about you it is generally going to be something you miss.

Being part of the majority means you just don't have the sensor systems and you can't really develop your own.

Hopefully you never have to make policies or moderate targeted harassment of a minority community you don't belong to, but sometimes these things happen.

If you do find yourself in this position let me share an analogy I have found useful in these situations.

I short cut it as you don't have the geiger counter.

It's really difficult to get all people to agree on anything

... but PayPal managed it: I think everybody agrees that PayPal sucks

Quote posts and broader search capabilities here without more effective privacy and moderation tools being delivered first will be insufferable very quickly. You can search for this toot and quote me on that later.

pro tip following up on how to protect Black people on fedi

Instance mods are racist, suspend the instance.

Instance owners are racist, suspend the instance.

Instance refuses to effectively moderate racism, suspend the instance.

Instance refuses to defederate from literal no-hyperbole Nazis, suspend the instance.

Suspend racist instances when you find out about them, be it from reports, fediblock, getting harassed yourself, or any other way. Same as you suspend racists.
