These machines can do neither. They produce strings of tokens that statistically appear like they were produced by a human.

To an LLM the statements “Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon” and “Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on Mars” are differentiated only in that more people have written the former than the latter.

That’s it.

AI doesn’t exist and companies letting what we DO have make decisions is just a way to avoid culpability for the results.

So... has anyone started posting ChatGPT-generated comments on Hacker News yet? Because I honestly doubt that an outside observer would be able to tell in that environment

david tennant wearing a pride pin ever since one of his kids came out as nonbinary and saying cis people need to step up to make sure we stop a slide into fascism and loss of human rights is making him my fav doctor for the week

@joepie91 @zkat It is appalling how those vultures see inequity not as an injustice to be addressed, but as an arbitrage opportunity to be exploited.

politiek

Cute queers in my computer, why are none of you here right now to snuggle me?

angry, harassment

OK, a bit less subtoot this time: quantum computing as a field inherits the toxic culture of both academic physics research and 10x SWE techbros. As a result, harassment in general and sexual harassment in particular are absolutely pervasive in the field.

If you do not 100% take a proactive stance against that from the get-go, your space *will* be home to harassers. That's not a possibility, it's a certainty.

That didn't stop being true once the hellsite imploded and people noticed the fediverse. So yes, you need a code of conduct, and you need a moderation policy, and you need both in place *before* you admit a single fucking user.

Think about it like this.

We’ve
never seen a show that speculates what the world would look like if Natives defeated the colonizers and kept their land but have several projects fantasizing about what if the Nazis won.

That’s not by accident.

I’ve just discovered r/BirdsTakingTheTrain, this is amazing

Okay, you all seem energized, so here we go! This time, with feeling!!

The Icculus Microgrant has money to give out! If you have an OPEN SOURCE PROJECT OF ANY SIZE, you are eligible!

Just reply to this toot with your project(s) and I'll put you on the list!

You can nominate other projects, too. You do not have to be American to participate; I send money in lots of currencies around the world!

(This toot brought to you by yet another recent comment on the internet arguing basically exactly that)

Like, if your response to "abolish marketing" is "but then how would I find good stuff", then you REALLY need to do some serious introspection about what exactly you think marketing is or whose rules it is following, and what that means for you

Show thread

It really boggles my mind how people still cling to the idea that marketing is somehow a necessary component of society, that its purpose is somehow to 'inform you of the best options to solve your problem'

I cannot imagine the gall of these companies forcing remote jobs to be on-site again. There's absolutely no limit to the power that companies will seize if they feel like they have even half a shot of getting away with it.

Like, having a paywalled video is one thing, but fuck off with this sort of bait-and-switch shit

Really not a fan of this recent trend of "the video on YouTube is really just a long teaser for a paywalled video on Nebula"
