Recurring theme I'm seeing from .art users who have been here for a few days - sometimes just one day - returning to birdsite and just not being able to stomach it, finding themselves more acutely aware of how toxic the environment is after spending a day in our little nook's coziness.

Is there a hashtag for stuff like donating your own grown food to the community? (Seen @tuatarara just posting about this and want to check the relevant communities can find the post :D)

Looking for a speaker/charity that does intro to LGBTQIA+ talks, focused on trans rights. Got moolah. Does anyone have suggestions?

Advice to new people from Twitter

There have been many waves of exodus from Twitter. When new people arrive they often bring with them their larger-than-life Twitter persona with them. I understand what that's all about, because it's how Twitter trains people to behave if they want to be seen and engage with their audience and so that the timeline algorithm works in their favour.

But here in the fediverse you don't need to put on a big performance. You can be more authentic, and just hang out with friends. Edginess which would be rewarded by the algorithm on Twitter tends to be discouraged here, and might even get you blocked.

#feditips a non-joke one, using image description is very good and almost everyone here does it, if you're new here you should too, accessibility is very important and if you post an image try to make sure that even people who can't see it (at all or well) can tell what you're posting about

you know how you hate it when the doctor makes unnecessary and snide comments about how your health problems are your own fault or is otherwise gross about your body, or they're basically no help at all? so you avoid going to the doctor to the extent possible?

this is what fossbros are like for computers

I'm pleased to note that even dolphin.town, my Mastodon server where the only letter you are allowed to post is "e", has seen increased activity in the last few days.

Thanks Eeeeelon!

Ik heb een birdsite live instance opgezet om mensen te helpen verhuizen naar mastodon. Je vult er een twitter username in en dan krijg je een account die je kan volgen op mastodon met al hun tweets. Probeer het op birdsite.frog.fashion

fossbro opinions on the fediverse

* harassment instances dont exist (i as an allocishet white man know this of course!!)
* you are now allowed to defederate from your harassers thats against the spirit of the fediverse !!
* if you want moderation you should use twitter instead (im a supporter of foss btw)

about the current harassment wave, boost for awareness

the harassment instances such as poast, nicecrew, etc are currently going through the introductions hashtag to try and find any queer people they can find to harass, as well as spamming it with their own shit.

a lot of the harassment replies /untag/ the original poster so they might not realize those are replies are there but other people looking at the post will see them.

please defederate from any such instances to keep your users safe, they're very nasty.

Under-rated feature on Masto:

The "Delete & re-draft" button

It does exactly what's on the label

It deletes your post, but puts it back in the editor so you can fix that *one* thing easily

Please don't censor words!

If you change characters in the words then the keyword mute thing can't filter out the post from people's timelines.

Trust people to block keywords they don't want to see!

(Also you can put things in CWs if you want to be extra cautious.)

The most daunting thing for me about joining Mastodon/Fediverse was picking an instance.

Having joined one, a RL metaphor emerges for me: "it's like picking an apartment building."

You need to evaluate the management. Do they respect tenant rights? Is the desk clerk skeevy?

Do you want to live in a big impersonal complex? Or a little boarding house, where people share a lot and have house parties? You can even be a "home owner" and run your own instance (pay the bills, fix the plumbing).

Modest proposal for Mastodon newcomers

You came here to leave behind algorithmic feeds, advertisement and annoying overruling billionaires. But, probably, you won't immediately delete all your corporate social media accounts. It's not easy, I get it.

The good news is that being active in different social media could mean experimenting with different social media behaviors. If corporate social media are spammy and attention-grabbing, why not using them only for the spammy and attention-grabbing posts, for the relentless self-promotion that many of us are sort of required to do for work?

Let's leave the eyeball-accumulation mindset to birdsite (that's what we call Twitter here), facebook and instagram. Free from that burden, we can make this a space of authentic exchange, not one where everyone shouts at one another while nobody is listening.

@bram_dingelstad 🤣 I'll be honest, having been on mastodon since 2016 and sharing the space with the people here who can actually be themselves without as much fear of running into hate as they do on other sites, does a whole lot to broaden your understanding of the world and the way people with privilege can make it a better place for people without.
