“I told you so.”
negative. assigns blame. a cliche. you are being petty.

“it was foretold.”
ominous. no one's fault. rad as hell. you mght be a prophet.

@bananas Sure, the problem is that if eg. someone leaves an in-collection book hanging around in the out-of-collection pile (briefly put it down to put on a coat or whatever and forgot about it), there is no way to spot this at any point in the process of selling it

I bought a bunch of books from the local library, stuff they were removing from the collection, and I'm kind of confused about how their process works.

They're not labelled as 'removed from collection', they still have the original inlay and RFID tag, they're indistinguishable from regular borrowable works in every way that I can identify, and they didn't scan them to sell them to me either - they just counted them and multiplied them by 1.50 EUR.

I have absolutely *no idea* how they are preventing these books from getting mixed up with the rest of the collection, whether unintentionally or otherwise.

"Trapping AI" – Slight Update! 🌀

Activity in the "Trapping AI" project is accelerating: in just under a month, over 26 million requests have hit our tarpit URLs 🕳️. Vast volumes of meaningless content were devoured by AI crawlers — ruthless digital leeches that relentlessly scour and pillage the web, leaving no data untouched.

In the coming days, we’ll roll out a new layer of complexity — amplifying both the intensity and offensiveness of our approach. This escalation builds on fakejpeg, a tool developed by @pengfold.

🖼️ fakejpeg generates fake JPEGs on the fly. You "train" it with a collection of existing JPEGs, and once trained, it can produce an arbitrary number of things that look like real JPEGs — perfect for feeding aggressive web crawlers junk 🗑️.

always a good reminder for the freelancers out there, educate yourself a little on legalese. I'm not an expert by any means, but a little competency goes a long way.

I recommend the Graphic Artists Guild Handbook as a good reference for this as they have example contracts. I got recommended this early on in my career by a mentor of mine, and it changed how I approached running a freelance business: graphicartistsguild.org/the-gr

I was a bit shocked. They weren't even offering a great rate. But still.

There's no way I'd sign a non-compete when I run a freelance business working with many direct competitors. They'd have to lock in a long-term contract with very high pay for me to even consider that.

No thanks.

Show thread

Had a possible new client there who sent me their NDA so we could talk more in detail on the project before signing contracts. But it included, no joke, conflict of interest and non-compete clauses for up to a year... for an NDA!

They wouldn't remove them, so I walked.

Always read every agreement.

@denmanrooke As a freelance software developer, I've seen companies do this so often. I eventually got tired of having to argue about the non-competes every time and just paid to have my own (actually reasonable) T&C drafted and now I offer them that instead of signing whatever garbage 'contractor agreement' customers come up with.

if any programmers want to know what chronic pain or sensory issues feel like, set your compiler to "treat all warnings as errors" and to be as pedantic as possible.

anyway, empathy is an ideology according to capitalism instead of essential
all because it couldn't be commodified until charities came along

but is that commodified empathy, or commodified guilt?

"[M]ost people don’t know what Pride is about. The anguish, and the hurt, and the reason why Pride started in the first place—it was an anti-cop event. Look, yes—I know there are trans police officers. You have Black people who are police officers, and women police officers. All that’s cute, but guess what: It’s blue first, your other allegiances second. Once you get on that blue, child, it goes straight through to your brain, dyes your brain blue, and you’re no longer whoever the fuck you were before. So no, they don’t need to be there. That’s where their loyalty lies. So stay the fuck away from me."

July is Queer Wrath Month, but it is also Disability Pride Month, and this month marks a special pride flag that many of us might not realize we get to fly.

Disabilities come in all forms, but the one that affects me most is an invisible one up in my brain: ADHD.

Executive Dysfunction, short term memory issues, and auditory processing disorder, are among the most pronounced symptoms that impact my ability to function at a normal level.

food (vegan), negative

The local fruit-and-vegetable market stall folks apparently retired 😔

Really nice people, really good fruit (far better than I can get anywhere else) and the retirement seems pretty sudden so it's a bit concerning

@daedalus Oh yeah, for sure. Where 'urgent' is defined as "this is getting in the way of doing the thing that I, personally, want to do", of course.

food (not vegan)

The local weird cheese shop has rapidly become one of my favourite shops; they have a really interesting mix of decent-and-affordable cheese, heavily discounted (>50%) miscellanous food products from overstock, and unusual stuff like weird flavours of candy.

It's technically a chain of stores, but it sure doesn't feel like it either.

They said they wanted a fairytale wedding, but when I show up and place a curse on their firstborn, suddenly I’m an asshole!

Music festivals are now so important for :sncb: that they don’t show intermediate stops when the trains goes along a music festival…
