@cmb "Get the second cheapest option, not the cheapest option" is good advice for a shocking amount of things, to be honest.
My hypothesis is that the second cheapest option is cost-optimized with corners only cut in the places where it's okay to do so, and the cheapest option cuts *every* possible corner including the ones you shouldn't.
Let's take a detour through 18.03 instead! Which ships Nix 2.x but also evaluates correctly with Nix 1.x, it seems
The problem seems to be the Nix 2.0 release, as newer versions of nixpkgs require it, and 17.09 still has a Nix 1.x. Also for some reason mapAttrs is missing

Extremely good insulation & soundproofing in all buildings
dimmer switches installed within reach of every bed/seating area
All clothing labels are just printed, or made of very soft fabric & stitched into the seam.
Within walking distance (like 2 long blocks, 4 regular ones)) of every home there's a weather-tight outbuilding where you can drop off things you're done with (e.g. leftover yarn), and pick up things other people have dropped off. It also contains a community fridge & closet. Once a month, the contents are rotated between outbuildings.

A slightly funny dimension to how strongly Iceland is associated with Viking culture is that the settlement of Iceland finished at around 930 CE and converted to Christianity in 1000 CE, so we were only pagan for a few decades of our history.
@jacksonchen666 Right, I was more thinking of stuff like PC backups for creatures who don't already have server infrastructure, the kind of scale where it doesn't really make sense to maintain your own backup infrastructure and where the off-the-shelf options are often quite expensive (especially if you don't have much money).

honestly sometimes though, the objections to Rust for Linux seem to be "the queers are coming" as a lot of the talking points are very simular to homophobic talking points, but with gay/queer replaced with rust
"they are forcing their sexuality on us" becomes "they are forcing rust on us"... when they are not, its a layer maintained by the rust team
also getting a big vibe that Chris Doesn't even seen to be bothering to find out infomation
I'm considering offering free (encrypted) Borg backup space for marginalized creatures (mainly meant for personal stuff, space is somewhat limited, think tens of GB per user rather than hundreds) in two locations, NL and US.
Would anyone be interested in this? No availability guarantees but it's the same backup space that I use for my own stuff as well. Note that the server for the NL location is operated by a US company.

Fascists exterminate disabled people, including people who are actually insane instead of rhetorically "insane".
You cannot fight eugenicists with eugenicist rhetoric, even in "humor". It actually strengthens eugenics and ableism.

This makes it sound so easy and it's not, but remember that you don't have to save the world all alone. Millions of people all over the place, millions of people who never cared that much about politics are rising up right now demanding an end to all the nonsense. You can be a link in that chain - pull your weight and do whatever you have to do to avoid breaking under the pressure.
