@silvermoon82 @smitten RCS is now common/default on Android at least, and that does provide all of these things, and it's mostly a behind-the-scenes change and falls back to SMS where it's not supported.
(The reason WhatsApp originally became popular in NL was because it was free to send messages, whereas SMS cost money per message)

@elilla And a detail that I missed: a big part of what makes this work also seems to be that we try to talk out issues *early*, as soon as they start grating, before they have a chance to fester and cause grudges and frustrations to build up

@elilla For what it's worth, I think that this is actually very useful advice - you can usually learn most from how things have gone wrong. Stories and experiences like this are exactly what helped me figure out healthier ways of community-building over the years.
The result so far, here, is a household that I would say is somewhere between 'polycule' and 'small commune', but moving towards the latter very very slowly and gradually as we figure things out and stabilize them, I guess we'll eventually end up shaping a commune out of the household, though who knows what the future holds. And it all pretty much started as "me hosting queer folks" too, and just sort of developed from there.
What has helped a lot here too is that we all come from an online queer community that has a strong emphasis on conflict resolution and talking out problems, leaving a ban as the last resort when someone is structurally refusing to engage in the conflict resolution process, and so much of this is "just" a matter of porting that to a physical household/community, and working out the pragmatic issues like chore division and delegation. We've all already had a chance to practice this mode of interaction in a lower-stakes environment.

I feel like media preservation (not just digital media either) is maybe 20% "finding an intact copy of the thing" and 80% "dealing with copyright and DRM bullshit"
@gsuberland@chaos.social Forum seems to have traces of it operating until 2023 with poor service levels, but yeah, nothing official I can find... which is odd for what's supposed to be a cooperative?
Anyone know what happened to Fairmondo? Ran across it in my search for something, but the site seems dead, the forum is full of complaints (but somehow still running), but there doesn't seem to be any kind of formal shutdown announcement.

Another form of adding extra rails to the track (tho not for running trains of different gauges) is installing guard rails, also known as catching rails
Those are most commonly used (and often mandatory) on bridges and in tunnels. Their purpose is making sure the train keeps running in the same direction and doesn't fall out of the track in case of a derailment

Usually, when traveling by train between countries that use different railway gauges, passengers need to change trains
However, sometimes on long-distance or sleeper connection, an alternative solution is used – bogie exchange
The entire train is rolled into a maintenance depot, then railcars are decoupled and lifted off their bogies (the element that wheels are attached to) using a special crane
Bogies get rolled out, and a new set is rolled in to align with a car and lower it back down onto it
That procedure is used for freight cars e.g. on the China-Russia border, but also it's a standard procedure for passenger coaches, in such cases doors get locked for the time of the operation and passengers remain inside while the cars are worked on
This allows multiple long-distance connection from Ukraine to Europe to exist, before the war and COVID also allowed multiple Russian trains to enter European rails
