re: unnecessarily harsh take on alt text that is also a subpost
like I call this "unnecessarily harsh" because I know that people don't just wake up and decide to be ableist, and that in fact, we do live in a society
and that working on your internal oppressions is a nontrivial amount of energy you do have to spend, that people might not have because society is already being shit to them
but like, at least as someone who has spent a lot of time getting over those internalised issues… it feels like people are confusing the energy to actually do the thing, with the energy required to become a better person, and as a result do neither
like… sorry, buddy, but if you're upset about people calling you ableist, they're doing that because you are
unnecessarily harsh take on alt text that is also a subpost
honestly writing alt text is a lot of work that often gets unnoticed but I do genuinely feel like people don't understand the distinction between
"this is a lot of work I don't have the energy to put in"
and
"performing this work makes me think about how low-vision and low-bandwidth people interact with media and how that must be a shit experience with so few people accommodating them, which makes me feel bad, which I don't like feeling, so, I'm not writing alt text so I don't have to think about it"
like it's one of those cases where people think so rarely about other people's experiences that the act of doing so tires them out, and then they can use that as an excuse for not having energy to do the thing
like again, alt text is difficult, and that is a genuine energy drain for some. as an autistic person, I know all too well how difficult it is to be forced to describe things in multiple ways, and having to make a picture and write text for the picture? sometimes that feels impossible
but sometimes I genuinely don't believe that people are being genuine about their inability to do alt text. like they don't see it as part of the full package of sharing a thing and so they do the visual part and then oops! out of energy, sorry, I'm still gonna post and get all the likes and shares tho~
re: Matrix governance shit, rant
Also growing increasingly tired of the "the Matrix spec is a collaborative process, and we would like more people to get involved in development" refrain
Well maybe you shouldn't have these kind of fucking barriers that you can only pass if you are abled or it's your full-time job, then
re: Question about bicycle lights with replaceable batteries
@maxi I've personally not had issues with them, but it's possible that some models don't stay put quite as well, of course... so I don't know.
(Note that these things come disposable batteries included, usually, but they can be swapped; you'll have to track down rechargeable 2032s yourself though, and last I checked they *are* trickier to find)
re: Matrix governance shit, rant
As I was told: "it's not tracked as something which needs comment in the next 3 months."
Okay then. Guess you don't actually want your capacity issues to get resolved.
re: Matrix governance shit, rant
This marks the end of my attempts at fixing the governance process, I guess.
The MSC is here, in case you want to read it: https://github.com/matrix-org/matrix-spec-proposals/pull/4073/
Matrix governance shit, rant
Seriously, when will the Matrix people accept that their governance procedure is exclusionary and doesn't work?
Today I learned that you're apparently *expected* to repeatedly ping them for status updates over a timespan of months to get any MSC moving, including for an MSC whose purpose is literally to fix the governance and capacity issues for everything else
Fuck this shit, honestly. Fix your governance process if you actually want people to contribute. I can barely remember what I ate yesterday, why are you expecting me to do your job of proposal tracking
Bambu Lab
Bambu Lab's post about rooting tries very hard to sound friendly and like they're being accommodating, but what it's *actually* doing is trying to get people to give up their warranty (which isn't even going to be legal in many places, let alone ethical)
This is some very competent PR spin, and nothing more
Every now and then I look at the state of Youtube's autogenerated subtitles, and I am sorely disappointed in the fact that the minimum viable product is basically what we seem to be stuck with, now.
I would even just be happy with an easy way to correct the obvious mistakes, as a viewer, like that ‘Oakland’ bullshit in a video set in New Zealand.
Seriously, you want to tout your accessibility creds, Google? Spend some big bucks on making this actually top notch 🙄
Received our first AI-generated security vulnerability report at the museum today. Wasted about an hour’s worth of staff time double checking it wasn’t a real concern before filing it in the circular bin.
We’re just a museum with a website, and the stupid fucking LLMs are wasting our time with this shit. I imagine the open source maintainers are drowning in this shit.
Never before has a technology wasted so many people’s time so utterly. Fuck the grifters trying to sell this as “AI”.
you can't beat capitalists by saying no
they don't understand that word
you have to make them an offer they can't accept
@jacksonchen666 It's more likely than you think! https://github.com/elitak/nixos-infect
@az (Had a very similar moment at a hacker event when I asked the CTF people "am I supposed to have obtained a copy of your entire CTF codebase?" and the response I got was "uhhhhhhhhh... *nervous laugh*")
@az I think you passed, and the examinators didn't
re: Question about bicycle lights with replaceable batteries
@maxi These are extremely widespread in the Netherlands, and they take button cell batteries: https://www.action.com/nl-nl/p/2575082/walfort-fietsverlichting/
I believe Action also exists in Germany nowadays, they might have them there as well.

Kijktip: https://www.youtube.com/@weetjedatookweer
Krijg hier wel een beetje Tom Scott vibes van :)
In the process of moving to @joepie91. This account will stay active for the foreseeable future! But please also follow the other one.
