We do not work with transphobes/fascists/racists. If you open an issue or PR on our git repo and we see you are one of those things, or hang out with people like that, we will kick you out of our space. We have no patience for bigotry, and we see no reason whatsoever to tolerate having it anywhere near us. Fuck terfs and fuck nazis.

re: fedi shit

@seb @CobaltVelvet@octodon.social "Learning from this incident" includes "understanding why people got angry at you and didn't mince words".

re: fedi shit

@seb @CobaltVelvet@octodon.social Given that your initial response was "we don't see evidence of this account being transphobic", I don't feel that you can blame this on 'delay'.

And tone-policing the people who are the target of this abuse *after* you initially decided not to suspend, is probably not where your priorities should lie.

It's good that they're suspended now, but I do hope that you realize that there's something to learn from this situation beyond that, and that you (personally or as a team) have work to do here.

@aurynn @nev Yeah! And it frustrates me that no other outlet seems to care to even *try* copying it

📢 Ten Forward Moderation Announcement 📢

The following instance(s) have been suspended from Ten Forward:

ioc.exchange - a transphobic user was moderated despite a report and me reaching out to the admin directly via DMs.

the user and post in question - hxxps://ioc.exchange/@gewure/109811032931084137

CW for blatant transphobia. It's bad.

I am attaching a screenshot of my DM conversation with the admin.

@aurynn @nev I've found the most interesting model so far to be that of De Correspondent in the Netherlands - you need a subscription to get access to the full archive and receive the newsletter.

Every individual article, however, can be linked freely and indefinitely, without requiring the recipient to have a subscription or account. No view limits, no access restrictions, nothing.

Result: they've been financially healthy for years, and have been putting out more genuine journalism than nearly all of the other media outlets in NL combined.

@aurynn @nev Or even just outright copy one from the journalistic outlets that are doing just fine without ads, but even that is apparently too tall an order

It was nice to discover/realise that I can be very much "let's end advertising as a business model"

and ALSO be like "it is not my problem that you have to find a new business model"

i just don't emphasize it

cause the weird way disability rights and mainstream neurodivergent rights movements emphasize "we have the body/minds fix your broken systems and work cultures! hire us!" truly makes my anti-work anarchist ass itch

like get hired to survive, yes.

but save more than a crumb of integrity if you can.

mastodon.lol, suicide mention

@sahar Very short summary is that the admin told people to stop spoiling Hogwarts Legacy because it meant more moderation work, this was not well-received by trans folks in particular, their criticisms were ignored (and in a few cases responded to with "kill yourself" from the admin) and then the admin decided to shut down the instance soon.

re: mastodon meltdowns, meta

@CapeHeaven @feditips@mstdn.social "fedi" is short for "the Fediverse", which is basically the totality of the federated network that Mastodon is also a part of, but not everything on fedi is Mastodon :)

re: fediblock, cyberplace.social, of course it's regarding fucking Hogwarts Legacy

@kim OTOH I'm pleasantly surprised by Rich Felker's response, so it's not all bad

@joepie91 I have been trying to remind myself of how there are no utopias. When you migrate, you are not moving to paradise. You are just hopefully going somewhere better.

And once there, you are part of it. Which implies a responsibility to you, and you to it. Responsibilites like trying to make the place better for each other. No place is going to be perfect. But we as a community can make it better and better, until it's the best we can get it.

fediblock, cyberplace.social, of course it's regarding fucking Hogwarts Legacy

#fediblock cyberplace.social

admin gossithedog just ducking and dodging criticisms like a pro to continue to keep self-justifying playing (and actively posting about) Hogwarts Legacy. "ally" my ass. typical "cis ally" that only helps when it suits them.

re: mastodon meltdowns, meta

@sahar Not any one specific event, but more generally the 'drama' that I sometimes see people complain about, it's kind of a recurring topic

(mastodon.lol is just one of the most recent cases)

re: fediblock, cyberplace.social, of course it's regarding fucking Hogwarts Legacy

@kim Disappointed but not remotely surprised

mastodon meltdowns, meta

Yes, it really sucks when an instance shuts down. Yes, it really sucks navigating interpersonal conflicts. Yes, it really sucks discovering that some admins are shitty, actually.

But, consider this: this isn't just about a migration from Twitter to Mastodon - or to fedi, for that matter.

Rather, we're all collectively having to relearn how to build and maintain communities and their infrastructure, after two decades of total reliance on corporations to (fail to) do so.

That *is* going to be a messy process, involving a lot of conflict as people figure things out. For many, it's learning these things the hard way, through trial and error.

It may be painful, but it's very much worth it in the long run. And fedi just happens to be the environment that people learn it in.
