This story with Tracy Chou, an engineer who specifically works on creating tools to stifle organised harassment online, getting posts removed from mastodon.social because of "reverse sexism/racism," is maddeningly infuriating.

We know that Mastodon's flagship instances have been having issues with moderation for a while, but this seems to point that the trend has gone from "ineffective absent moderators" to "moderators protecting the feelings of white men," which I think will backfire. It also validates every criticism the fediverse receives for being a bastion of tepid, neoliberal, unexamined racism-as-reflex whiteness.

To echo Tracy Chou's bannable offense: I also heavily recommend reading more books by non men, by non white people, and by non cisheterosexual people. What a violent ideology! Tabarnouche. :blobcatreeeeeee:

Heads up folks: if you use spelling tactics that help to prevent getting hassled by trolls or mods on the other sites, such as spelling "Rump" as "R*mp," all that accomplishes here is messing up people's individualized filters for their personal curation needs.

Just spell the word/name/curse from the deep. The filters will do the work. #feditip

If I could have a minor superpower, I'd want to walk into a room and *whoosh* put everything back where it belongs. Then I'd head straight for the British Museum

A long time ago, I wrote a site called ConRoomies. It has proven to be pretty popular for furries finding roommates for cons.

Unfortunately, it was built in the height of the Web 2.0 login craze, and its only way of authenticating is with a Login with Twitter button. Oooops.

Well, it has given me the opportunity to do some much needed engineering work that really should have been done years ago anyway.

Just another reminder about putting all your tech eggs in one basket.

re: Openning a big instance

@Kye@tech.lgbt @ajroach42 I mean, *some* conflict is unavoidable in any setting, of course, that's what moderators are for. But those kind of conflicts can be de-escalated and resolved because they are not *fundamental* disagreements.

re: Openning a big instance

@ajroach42 Because people are looking for community, people who they feel safe with and who they feel understand their life and experiences.

re: Openning a big instance

@ajroach42 Yes, but that's not the problem I'm alluding to - the problem I'm talking about is much more fundamental.

Put 50k people with nothing in common in a room, and you *will* have fights break out. What makes moderation and selective federation work on fedi is that each instance is themed around something that people have in common, that people can reliably find agreement on.

This is why basically every "general" instance turns into a moderation nightmare of some sort; you very quickly run into irreconcilable differences, and eventually you will get fediblocked for the worst of your instance population.

@crowgirl@hachyderm.io I've elaborated a bit more here: social.pixie.town/@joepie91/10

(I probably should've attached to the thread here instead, oops)

re: Openning a big instance

@ajroach42 I feel like the most important question isn't addressed here: how do you prevent this from becoming another mastodon.social-esque poorly-moderated general server?

The real scaling problem is in dealing with people, not with servers, and if there's not even a unifying factor in terms of interest/politics/etc. among the users, I don't see how it could ever be moderated effectively, even with paid mods.

re: meta, Hachyderm, FediBlock

@mxkoder@hachyderm.io Right, this is why I added an addendum reply to my post shortly afterwards - I realize that not *everybody* on Hachyderm is like this.

The problem however is that Hachyderm as a whole is very rapidly starting to become a threat to the broader fediverse and everything that people have painstakingly built up, and that is a higher priority to me.

This wouldn't be such a problem if people were willing to hang back and get a read of the community first, but instead a lot of people are driving capitalist nonsense into fedi at full speed, and that's a real problem.

The corporate policy is a great example of this - the sensible thing would have been to *not* invite corporations and wait it out for a few weeks to get a sense of the community first, but instead they're just... going ahead with it anyway. "Do it first, ask questions later".

And that's just not how it works here, consent is generally considered to be non-negotiable around here. This is a big part of *why* fedi was such a nice place.

Obviously people need time to acclimatize. But there are just too many people on Hachyderm who aren't taking that time at all and just *assuming* that their behaviour is welcomed here, and very little seems to be happening on an instance level to prevent or discourage this.

All in all, people seem to care more about onboarding corporations onto fedi, than they care about onboarding people to the existing community norms...

And this makes Hachyderm and particularly its leadership a threat to the existing community, and the typical response to that is an instance block.

All in all, I would recommend moving to an instance that has leadership that's more mindful of the broader fedi community. There are quite a lot of queer tech folks on here on other instances too!

(Honestly, the fact that Hachyderm advertises that it "has both capitalists and anti-capitalists" is a pretty clear indication that the moderation isn't going to improve. Capitalist-tolerant instances do not fare well here.)

Introducing the first alpha release of Mastodon 3.11 for Workgroups!

Available for Windows 95 :BlobhajShock:

@sam god I wish I could triple boost this.

People with “Twitter experience” seem to not realise that _the point_ of Mastodon is explicitly not the same as that of Twitter.

Mastodon centres safety, intent, and humans. Not numbers. Not engagement. Not any of the goals of Twitter.

The design that worked for Twitter is not what will work for Mastodon because they’re not shooting for the same goals.

Design is also about saying no to some things. Even if users “want them”.

re: meta, Hachyderm, FediBlock

To clarify: it's not that Hachyderm *only* contains this sort of thing, there is definitely a mixed population. But *every* time I see this stuff it is from either Hachyderm or m.s, and that's not good.

re: meta, Hachyderm, FediBlock

@Kye@tech.lgbt Yeah, it's extremely obvious that folks are uncritically trying to import startup culture here

meta, Hachyderm, FediBlock

The more I read conversations between Hachyderm users, the more the whole instance starts to look like a threat to the community to me, honestly.

Why is everybody over there constantly talking about marketing strategies and pivoting and onboarding of brands like fedi is some exciting new resource to exploit?

They still don't seem to realize that they are talking about people's metaphorical living rooms instead of some corporate platform, and repeatedly violating any concept of consent in the process.

That apparently the admin decided *not* to retract the "let's invite corporations" plan does not exactly help either...

I'm inclined to call this a recommendation, but receipts-wise I don't know that I want to call out any specific users, considering that this seems to just be the vibe of the whole instance, and it's not exactly very hard to find.

Please remember to feed the hamsters powering your instance during these trying times

Hey, friends: If you're still on mastodon.social or mastodon.online, you're about to lose track of weirder.earth, and other servers to follow soon. It's for the safety of our comrades: this is the quieter, kinder part of the fedi where we walk away from instances that can't or don't control harassers.

I know a lot of you still on mastodon.social and .online are newcomers who landed there because so many other instances have closed to new accounts. Please take this time to explore the fediverse and find somewhere with more reliable moderation. The move-instances tool works pretty well these days!

meta, terf

I don't care how many "good" journalists you have on your instance.

if you're having a prolonged ethical dilemma over whether to kick out a TERF, but have no problem taking swift action to kick out a trans person who mildly criticises you, congratulations: you are a TERF instance.
