My favorite random local news station in a place I don't live is KTVB in Boise. Yesterday, they reported that the City of Boise made the #pride flag an official city flag so that they aren't prohibited from flying it by the state of Idaho.
We really went from AI means you’ll only have to work 3 days a week to AI is going to take your job unless you work harder, faster and more efficiently in the blink of an eye.
@KuJoe I'd be very skeptical of such claims of results.
I'm reminded of the hype around blockchain tech, which in B2B was accompanied by a lot of claims about savings and efficiency gains as well, but then when you looked closer it was usually a subtle but total misrepresentation of what actually happened, and in the end none of it actually worked as people claimed.
My bet on the 'savings' here are that either a) this wasn't actually LLMs or the current generation of "AI" and rather older, more specialized systems, b) it *was* the current-gen stuff but with so much manual guidance that it was ultimately still just humans doing the work, or c) the measurement itself was selected to show positive outcomes, regardless of real-world effects.
(B2B claims are usually only looked at by people on the management layer and not by the subject matter experts, so if you sound confident enough you can pretty much just claim whatever you want, it doesn't need to stand up to scrutiny)
Don't listen to what these companies say. Watch what they do.
When they say "all code will be created by A.I.", are they hiring software engineers?
When they say "AI will replace SaaS", are they acquiring SaaS products?
Printed and laminated a prototype of my solar slide rule on 350g A3 at the local print shop and it works fairly well! Correcting sextant height for index error, temperature, refraction, height of eye and lower limb is fast, as is computing latitude from the noon sight. Computing Hc and Z is a bit more involved (using additional scales on the reverse side)
Beware of "compostable" products that aren't actually compostable at home. In digging through my compost pile this week I unearthed 3 forks (from takeout food I purchased several years ago) that I think were made by the California-based company, Karat Earth (aka Lollicup). On Amazon and elsewhere the sentence the company uses in marketing is "simply toss the fork into a compost bin when finished." And the forks themselves have the text, "compostable" embossed on them. On company's own website, however, is a logo from the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) indicating, in a small font, that forks are "commercially compostable only," which means they only begin to break down at ~190 °F (88 °C). Somebody needs to file a class-action lawsuit to force greater transparency on marketing materials. #compost #composting #fork #takeout #food #psa #plastic #restaurants #greenwashing #polymer #corn #bioplastic
Assisted dying, ableism, eugenics
A quadriplegic man named Normand Meunier died via MAiD (Medical Assistance in Dying) after being neglected for 4 days in ER. He was denied a specialized mattress, wasn’t turned & ended up with terrible bed sores.
His partner says she was threatened with removal from the ER for advocating for him.
Everyone who’s involved in the assisted dying debate, both disabled and non disabled, should be following this inquest.
People need to understand that you can’t ethically administered assisted death if you aren’t committed to helping patients live as well
Mr Meunier didn’t want to die. His condition wasn’t terminal.
He suffered such severe neglect that he couldn’t bring himself to return to the hospital.
His pressure sores couldn’t be treated at home, so he opted to end his life rather than face returning to the place that harmed him
No one should suffer like this, yet disabled people know all too well the level of neglect that can occur in the hospital.
They know how important it is to have an advocate, but they also understand that your advocate can be removed at any time.
The imbalance of power is huge
With just a bit of compassion and care, Mr Meunier would still be with us.
Instead he fell through the cracks, suffered the consequences and then the government stepped up to end his life.
It feels very wrong that the same system that neglected him also ended his existence
I will be following the inquest closely & hopefully writing an article about it.
I support the right to die, but we need to have some very tough conversations about how to protect disabled and marginalized people from neglect, coercion & abuse.
We’re failing at that right now. Let’s change things.

@Timo_Micro So from what I understand, the best thing to do is to ask the people striking - as different strikes have different desired outcomes.
There's strikes that revolve around boycotts, but there's also strikes where people definitely *shouldn't* boycott the employer, because the goal is to create pressure on the employer and that works best when there's as much demand as possible.
Some unions speak publicly about what they want people to do, but when they don't, I've found that those striking are usually happy to answer the "what to do to support the action" question, if you can get in touch with them. Otherwise I'd try to guesstimate whether the goal is to create demand pressure or something else.

In that same speech, she also declared that the most radical socialist party in the parliament will now receive financial aid and ideological support from the unions, something that had previously been reserved for the more moderate left-wing parties.
@jonny "Surely they would've thought of this? Right? RIGHT?"
(This is the theme song that plays in my mind half the time I'm doing code auditing for work)
@jonny If I recall correctly, some infosec folks have already successfully demonstrated such an attack on LLMs (this is distinct from the "register packages with commonly-LLM-fabricated names" attack)
Maybe to be prepared, we don't only need to have sufficient stocks and a battery powered radio, but more local communities producing whatever are our first needs. For me it connects to the #CommunityEconomy, with local energy grids in the hands of neighbours, telecommunications infrastructure that is owned and governed by your local community, food coops and community supported agriculture.

Then there is the #Preparedness Strategy by the European Commission, urging all EU citizens to have an emergency kit at home and have stocks at home for at least 72 hours. Being prepared is not bad, I'd say, but IMHO this is far too individualist. Between the neighbours and local community we care for each other. That is lesson number one from such a crisis situation. You can never have everything you need at home, and mutual support and interdependence is vital.
