@hweimer I have been involved in some of these projects and no, they are certainly not sustainable, especially with a worsening political and social environment.

@molenaar @mina Yep; I have frequently linked students to this article to set the right expectations :)

@Violet Oof, this definitely sounds like some serious air quality problems :/

In the past I've dealt with this kind of airflow issue by putting a fan directly adjacent to the (open) window to maximize the air circulation, in such a way that there's also space for an outgoing air stream through the same window. Though it sounds like your room may be worse in terms of airflow than any room I've ever dealt with...

@Violet Hmm, do you also sleep better if there's a bit of wind outside? If so, it may be worth trying to fit a cheap large-blade fan (or even an air purifier/filter) into the room, to cause some active air circulation at all times.

@Violet Hm, I wonder if that may be part of the problem? Perhaps other places you've slept had more 'breathing space'? Might even be something as simple as too much stale air (eg. too high CO2 levels), which is more likely in smaller rooms.

@Violet This is going to sound weird, but have you tried moving or reorienting your bed within the room?

For new folks who may see this: You might start keeping your eyes open regarding the servers your new friends are interacting from. It's nothing ominous. Sometimes the first server you join is not the best fit for you, and a good way to find a better fit is to see which servers the people you enjoy are members of.

Maybe they have a longer character allowance, maybe they have a theme you are drawn to, or maybe it's the way their moderators keep icky stuff out of their time-line.

It's pretty easy to migrate from one server to another. I've done it and it was pretty smooth.

Edit: also for new people, you can edit stuff after you post it. For instance, if you type "theur" when you meant "their." (I did that and fixed this post after)

Serious question: Is there an open-source 2D printer (the type with paper and ink)?

If not, why not? Is there some serious production bottleneck that only HP&co can meet?

@mina Probably not quite the same problem you have with them, but from my perspective as a tutor, I hate 'bootcamps' with a passion.

They invariably promise impossible learning outcomes ("become an expert on _____ in two weeks!") and completely fail to teach foundational concepts, instead they tend to focus on rules-of-thumb and highly-specific patterns that aren't even appropriate in most cases, but it sure *looks* very advanced!

Every single time I've tutored someone who had tried a 'bootcamp' before, I spent the first few weeks to months 'un-teaching' all the nonsense they picked up during it... before we could start on the actual foundations of the skill.

Why is every single course a "bootcamp" now?

I don't like to get thrown into the mud and being yelled at.

I just want to learn some computer stuff whilst sipping my tea.

Maybe, I'm not made for this world or:

I just hate corporate speak.

The application form for proposals to #fluConf2025 is now closed!

We will now move on to reviewing the proposals we received. Those who submitted can expect a mail some time in the next day informing them of their proposal's status and any next steps.

Thanks to everyone who helped spread the word!

For people who are newer here, if you have too much US politics in your feed for your taste, you can do a few things to help yourself:

use keyword filtering tools available on your service. Use words commonly found in posts you don’t want to see, especially if the poster is thoughtful and uses hashtags consistently.
you can mute people temporarily (e.g. for a week or a month)
you can always unfollow people or mute people who post non-CW’d politics. It’s not rude, it’s self-care.

we all know meetings that should have been an email, but still make react websites that should have been static html.

@hweimer I think the missing component in your perspective is the large personal and social costs involved in making all those things happen.

The people who have burned out or who we have otherwise lost, as a consequence of various factors relating to power and agency over technology; abusers, bad governance, the fundamental power differential vs. tech corps, and so on.

Most of these initiatives exist *in spite of* immense social forces acting against them, and people frequently pay for them with their personal and/or community health, which is not a sustainable approach in the long term.

I think that is where the techno-pessimism is coming from; the knowledge that we are going to lose these things in the not-so-far future if something doesn't change about the larger power differentials involved.

health update

Today is my weekly 'testing day' where I measure various vitals for post-transplantation (oxi, pulse, BP, blood sugar) and it seems that coffee kind of spikes my BP now, but the blood sugar was 6.4 in the first test, which is a basically perfect value

I just blocked most common AI crawler user agents on all of my sites without exception :3 should have done that earlier
