@lynnesbian haha oh nooooo
we've never worked for Microsoft but it kind of sounds like five different teams each decided to "solve" the problem by making it someone else's
can a UI designer (preferably one who works at microsoft) tell me why there's a link in windows settings labelled "changing taskbar colour", which opens a bing search in edge for "change windows 11 taskbar colour site:microsoft.com", with colours spelt the UK way, which shows zero results but has a suggestion box containing a button labelled "open colors setting", with colours spelt the US way, which opens a new tab which asks if you'd like edge to open settings, which opens the windows settings app to the colour personalisation page, only to have the "set taskbar colour" switch be greyed out

...but from what I'm seeing, a lot of people in the US are worried about crackdowns on their jobs/roles/activism, and aren't aware of what's already out there to help them. Is this true? If it's true for you, would you appreciate some kind of guided introduction to readings and self-help resources for activists at risk?
us, small-p politics, safety
Here's a question for people in the US. When I was working for Big Human Rights(tm), one of the things I did was train activists in how to keep themselves as safe as they could while doing work that could put them at risk (e.g., LGBTI activists from countries that criminalised both homosexuality and public protest). A *lot* of resources already exist to help people know how to protect themselves...

@joepie91 like it's no exaggeration that homework was way easier at uni than at primary school because I was given way less busy work
like even though there were projects that required much more work and effort, they were easier with less busy work surrounding them
there were some people who gave out awful busywork homework but those were outliers and not the norm
smoking, school
@joepie91 or even just not forcing them to wake up early, or do homework
There's a guy in PA whose lifetime goal has been to plant 10 MILLION trees. And not tree plantations, a wide variety of Pennsylvania-appropriate trees and shrubs in yards, on farms, and in places we clear of invasive undergrowth (eg privet).
Obviously he doesn't do this on his own but rather through a large group of folks over time, although "Greg's sweat equity" is certainly a big part of it.
He emailed today to say he's got 200 to go and would I like to come to the work party on Friday.
I have a stupendous amount to do, find it hard to concentrate at the best of times, and I could really have done without Foursquare unexpectedly open sourcing their entire Places dataset today.
This is like an early Christmas. How am I supposed to think about anything else now.
When clams retract into their shell from threats, that has a cost. They can't eat or breathe new O2, and pulling the shell closed uses energy while staying open is "free". Many clams can habituate to repeated stimuli. It is a cost-benefit analysis that is always happening. Clams in captivity may stop closing altogether. I found that giant clams stay open in daylight to maximize photosynthesis of their symbionts, closing at night to protect themselves from predators. #clamFacts
Please tell me accounts who make really good alttexts. So, not only the bare minimum, but those who put joy and creativity into it.
Hit me!
Edit: I will add accounts under this toot subsequently for making outstanding alttexts (and not being shitty in other ways) as follow recommendations. Please feel free to do the same!
Edit 2: Translated whole toot to english
Update re: health and surgery
@ClaudetteK It seems that they're currently wanting to figure out why my calcium levels suddenly spiked so hard, to make sure that there's not an underlying hidden issue at play
Update re: health and surgery
Transplantation has not occurred yet. It has been delayed due to some weird blood values (high calcium, low white blood cells) that they want to investigate further, and I am currently awaiting results. So far, it's a lot of "nothing found".
New transplantation date TBD.
alright it's been like 5 minutes and someone already responded with "hey would you kindly move to Frankfurt for us" to a fully remote job search

Strong views about abolishing oppression, hierarchy, agency, and self-governance - but I also trust people by default and give them room to grow, unless they give me reason not to. That all also applies to technology and how it's built.
