smoking, school

@joepie91 like it's no exaggeration that homework was way easier at uni than at primary school because I was given way less busy work

like even though there were projects that required much more work and effort, they were easier with less busy work surrounding them

there were some people who gave out awful busywork homework but those were outliers and not the norm

smoking, school

@joepie91 or even just not forcing them to wake up early, or do homework

There's a guy in PA whose lifetime goal has been to plant 10 MILLION trees. And not tree plantations, a wide variety of Pennsylvania-appropriate trees and shrubs in yards, on farms, and in places we clear of invasive undergrowth (eg privet).

Obviously he doesn't do this on his own but rather through a large group of folks over time, although "Greg's sweat equity" is certainly a big part of it.

He emailed today to say he's got 200 to go and would I like to come to the work party on Friday.

smoking, school

With addiction seemingly mainly occurring under stress, I can't help but wonder how much of a dent you could make in youth smoking/vaping addiction simply by not forcing them to go to school anymore.

When clams retract into their shell from threats, that has a cost. They can't eat or breathe new O2, and pulling the shell closed uses energy while staying open is "free". Many clams can habituate to repeated stimuli. It is a cost-benefit analysis that is always happening. Clams in captivity may stop closing altogether. I found that giant clams stay open in daylight to maximize photosynthesis of their symbionts, closing at night to protect themselves from predators. #clamFacts

Please tell me accounts who make really good alttexts. So, not only the bare minimum, but those who put joy and creativity into it.
Hit me!

Edit: I will add accounts under this toot subsequently for making outstanding alttexts (and not being shitty in other ways) as follow recommendations. Please feel free to do the same!

Edit 2: Translated whole toot to english

Dear publishers: It's simple... Hire transgender reporters to cover transgender stories.

Update re: health and surgery

@ClaudetteK It seems that they're currently wanting to figure out why my calcium levels suddenly spiked so hard, to make sure that there's not an underlying hidden issue at play

Update re: health and surgery

Transplantation has not occurred yet. It has been delayed due to some weird blood values (high calcium, low white blood cells) that they want to investigate further, and I am currently awaiting results. So far, it's a lot of "nothing found".

New transplantation date TBD.

alright it's been like 5 minutes and someone already responded with "hey would you kindly move to Frankfurt for us" to a fully remote job search

Why is everyone getting snow, we only have rain 😔

tea advice

@dragonarchitect Something that may be worth trying: white tea or even green tea, both of those tend to have relatively little bitterness by themselves, and a more sweet/sour-y flavour. With green tea make sure to let the water cool for a bit before brewing, green tea + boiling hot water = very bitter tea.

re: ableism

@afewbugs @b_cavello Right. That's why I was trying to draw a distinction earlier between that deference to a certifying body vs. learning from the established practices! I certainly think that a lot can be learned from existing practices, even if I don't trust the certifying bodies to have people's best interests in mind, and that a lot *should* be learned from them.

I do feel somewhat qualified to speak on this because I've already been providing informal therapy on an ad-hoc basis in the past, with good results, and have learned a lot from diving into the existing practices. Psychology is somewhat of a special interest that's morphed into a form of activism for me, and I'm also pretty familiar with all the ways in which it can go wrong.

That certainly doesn't mean I'm an expert on everything, and there are problems and topics I absolutely won't touch because I don't know enough about them to know where all the 'mines' are, but I do feel that there's a lot of room for mutual therapy as long as those risks are recognized, especially in currently underserved communities.

(The reason for asking the original question is that I'm looking into making this a bit more of a publicly-offered thing, and also training others on how to provide it, to start up building a different kind of mutual support network that's currently either highly dependent on the state or just completely missing)

I got an idea this morning and made a thing. Also it's so satisfying everytime to publish a webpage!

@travissouthard Re: creators, that makes sense, though I also suspect it'll cause people to bounce off because they don't know where to start. Perhaps a text along the lines of "at the time of writing in 2024, some good places to look are [...], but this can change over time, keep an eye out on your favourite social media platform"? That communicates the impermanence of the recommendations while still providing a pointer.

Regarding the exploitation, I often point people at time.com/6247678/openai-chatgp for LLM things as a first read, though there are many such documented cases for different companies (and for the type of generative AI that this site seems aimed at, that may not be the best example?). I recall there being a site that compiles documentation of abuses in the AI industry, but can't recall the URL unfortunately.

After a talk with @theresnotime here on Fedi, I've released vthttpd on my GitHub!

vthttpd (Very Tiny HTTPD) is a #homebrew #HTTP #server software for #Nintendo #3DS consoles (forked from 3ds-httpd by dimaguy)

It includes *a bunch* of changes (way too many to list here!) and it was originally designed for a personal project of mine

I didn't intend to release this publicly at first, so some of the code might be a bit unpolished

Lol, I accidentally managed to download the 6.40 firmware for this device, which is normally hidden behind a contract option (which is scummy imo, no security updates for you if you don't pay us yearly!)

Anyway I didn't think much of it, but now after the case has been closed I can't download it anymore LOL... Otherwise I would've downloaded the latest 6.60 firmware

Anyway, for those stuck on old ass firmwares: archive.org/details/hpe-msl-64 :3

de tweede kamer is een terf armer! de aanleiding is wel wat jammer maar ja

@ari IIRC those registers used to have really specific purposes in the memory segmentation era (for which the names are abbreviations) and then over time, I believe also related to the change in memory model to paging, those registers got repurposed as general-purpose registers but their names never got changed

I hate how techy people look down on spreadsheets.

People who work with spreadsheets often do fucking magic in pursuit of making the computer do what they want.

And that's the essence of programming: Getting the computer to do what you want.

Is it a "good" environment by professional programmer standards? Hell no.

But it allows people to get shit done.

(and yes, an actual good spreadsheet system is one of my pipedreams (as is version control for regular people))
