re: wizard meta, the perfect combination

@eevee @trajing It's rather a bit different; people are posting spoilers to sabotage the fandom around the game, in an effort to make it unattractive and therefore unprofitable (and also 'raising awareness' of the issue among those who are *not* trans).

And the admin decided to take the stance of "don't do that because it inconveniences me as the instance admin who has to deal with it", which was predictably poorly received by trans folks who saw a supposed 'ally' try to take away one of the few ways in which they could actually effect change because of personal inconvenience.

And then the admin lashed out and decided to shut down the instance, and suddenly the entire conversation is about pity for the admin instead of the unaddressed policy issues, which is pretty questionable

re: mastodon dot lol meta

@joepie91 I think this is just the obvious endgame of the DARVO* tactics so many of us are culturally pre-programmed to fall back on.

They feel harmed by a report of harm they consider invalid, and DARVO to build a base of counter-support to fight the report instead of taking the report at face value.

Any community mod/admin who hasn't gotten a handle on this is one comment away from becoming an unintentional abuser.

re: the mastodon.lol admin telling someone to commit suicide

@juliana @kim @vantablack (Took me a while to figure out how to get to the original context - turns out that the new Mastodon frontend shows a remote account as 'suspended' even if it's only blocked locally but still exists on the original server...)

re: the mastodon.lol admin telling someone to commit suicide

@juliana @kim @vantablack Okay, after a bit more digging, this is *definitely* not the case, and it was absolutely an unacceptable response from Nathan

re: the mastodon.lol admin telling someone to commit suicide

@juliana @kim @vantablack One possible context in which I could understand it (as an emotional response), is in response to death threats. But it's not clear to me whether that happened here.

mastodon dot lol meta :boosts_ok_gay:

So to get this clear: death threats towards the admin are not okay, and that one decision alone doesn't make him a TERF. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt here, and assume that those things really did happen, even though I've seen none of them.

But, with that said: here's this very curious pattern again, where a supposed ally is called out on a decision they've made that harms the marginalized group they're supposedly an ally to.

And instead of engaging with that, listening, and correcting course - they just complain about the criticism, and take some kind of drastic measure (in this case, shutting down the instance).

And suddenly, the entire focus of the conversation shifts to "oh no how horrible, I'm sorry that you had to do that" towards the admin, and away from the thing that the admin was criticized for. Which they never actually properly engaged with.

And when you call out "hey uh, you never did do anything about that problematic thing", that will get cut down by other "allies" who argue that "this is not the right time to bring that up".

Suddenly, the "ally" who did the harmful thing is centered in the conversation. Instead of the marginalized folks that the harm is being done to.

It's a curious pattern, and it's not the first time I've seen it happen.

terf game

Even if you try to ignore the antisemitic TERF wizard game, you just... can't? Even running three redundant layers of ad blocking, Amazon and Newegg both show "sponsored" links on every page, the PlayStation remote app pushes ads to my phone...

I've never seen an advertising blitz for a game quite like this, it's just sickening.

This is the third time in two days that I am about to report an obscure instance with bad vibes to the pixie.town admins... and it's already on the blocklist, somehow

JK rowling, fighting against transphobia

this post fucking blasted me into the drywall. it's so powerful. please read this

@nathan Come on, you know better than to use these sorts of 'absurd extrapolation' arguments.

You're not literally Hitler, but if you have to make a choice between "keeping HP fans happy" and "supporting the struggle of trans folks even when the going gets rough", and you pick the HP fans...

well, let's just say that that raises questions about how much of an ally to trans folks you really are, and whether anyone can really depend on you to have their backs

subtoot

When you're an LGBTQ+ instance admin and you post "don't be mean and post Hogwarts spoilers" and nearly everybody who's cheering you on is cis...

that should maybe tell you something, I don't know

Professor Fig dies at the end of Hogwarts Legacy and can't be saved. Also, Rookwood is the one who cursed Anne. Congrats you were conned into joining a pogrom.

Wishing all #HarryPotter fans an awful day. Try Wizard of Earthsea, next time.

I also want to state: this decision from the joinmastodon.org website makes ZERO instances show up when a user selects the ‘LGBTQ+’ category. ZERO.

We all know these instances require manual sign-ups to prevent trolls and hate accounts from being created.

This decision is terrible.

Please Boost :boost_ok: this thread for visibility!!

As I was investigating why our server has seen a decrease in new user sign-ups, I noticed the JoinMastodon.org website now lists servers with ‘Instant’ sign-ups as a priority over those with manual signups.

They used to list ‘All’ by default - displaying our server under the Gaming category upon first look for new users. Now it’s hidden.

By actively reducing the visibility of servers who require sign-ups , it’s hurting the Fedi as a whole by creating large centralized servers.

"Unlimited PTO" is becoming more commonly offered as a benefit to workers. To me this reeks of being a trap, and I'm starting to think it is.

Unlimited PTO starts to feel a lot like Unprotected PTO.

There's no mechanism to require, nor even encourage, workers to take time off. There's no assumption that someone taking a reasonable amount of PTO won't be looked down upon by any particular member of management.

It seems like a grift. I'm guessing this isn't a new thought but I hope it spreads

@MsNostromo that's exactly what it is. The only way I've ever seen it work is when there is a minimum required time taken off.

If you think that young people "won't understand solidarity" or "care about unionising," it's because you're an ageist piece of shit.

Full stop.

If you happen to think that teenagers won't understand the importance of solidarity, I implore you to:

a) actually talk to teenagers because you likely don't and haven't done since you were one (and if you live with a teenager and think they're incapable, maybe you should consider your relationship to that person because... it's likely you who is a bigger issue);

b) pay attention to those of us who research their existence within historical movement spaces and try to bring that information back, rather than continuing to focus on the forever-patriarchal history our own "comrades" still feed us.

Young people have always been in labour movements. Young people have always been everywhere. But adults are fine with systematically erasing their contributions to... anything. Because it maintains the oppression of those younger than ourselves.
