@rune Usually C bros and the like try to defend their use of "scripting language" by arguing that it really means "interpreted language".

... conveniently overlooking that a) more than half of the supposed 'scripting languages' are not typically interpreted, and b) you could totally interpret C if you wanted to, because it's not a function of the language but of the runtime environment

To be clear, this doesn't mean that legitimate discussion cannot be had about the relative merits of some programming languages vs. others, but when someone tries to define that specifically along the axis of "scripting vs. programming language", that's incredibly sus

(Basically it's the techbro equivalent of a dogwhistle, a derogatory term for "not a Real Man programming language")

Reminder that "scripting languages" are not a thing that exists outside of a game development / macro context, and people using it in programming discourse (almost always in bad faith) are typically either necrocomputing enthusiasts or your typical toxic-masculinity C bros, or both

one of the main reasons to have a collection of faintly ridiculous smalltime hobbies is that it helps divert some of the nerdbrain impulses into mostly-harmless domains so you don't wind up applying them directly to stuff that matters, like friendships or operating a civilization.

If you think that the problem with antifa is that some of them are violent towards nazis, well, I don't know what to tell you.

custom filters that give me the option of displaying them continues to be one of my favorite recent mastodon features.

Something stresses me out? I can just silence it myself, but I can still see that it's happening so when I'm ready I can crack it open. Or in this case, ignore it entirely because AI generated stuff is fucking bullshit and you bet to hell I'm judging all y'all for going gaga over statistical machines based on plagiarism.

subtoot about this meme of "first they came for the journalists"

Maybe if journalists had covered all the marginalized groups with violence directed at them as if it weren't a debate with two sides they wouldn't suddenly think that they're the people the gov't "came for first" because god damn that meme is insulting.

Y'all are *not* the people they came for first, and you'd know that if you treated the previous victims as worthy of overwhelming and unambiguous coverage.

basically if you say “well, it’s not for me to determine whether abuse has occurred, so you and your abuser will just have to share space” that’s a red flag

re: grumbling, activism

@henry79@climatejustice.social @perigee It's not rhetorical in the slightest.

And yes, I agree that there is a role for people who 'translate' between the radical and the more easily palatable; I frequently take that role myself.

My frustration is with how the people complaining that "I agree but you're too radical" are rarely willing to do that translation job, and instead are expecting the radical folks themselves to moderate their expression.

@LaF0rge@chaos.social (Does seem to have been changed though)
