@pingiun I more mean the actual setup and maintenance part of NixOS - it's already trivial to get it running on pretty much any VPS (see eg. nixos-infect) but that's not where most of the complexity and learning curve is

Please suggest: instances with non-white admins or mods

I would like to be able to make recommendations to BIPOC who have been scared off by the (non)moderation of mastodon.social and some of the other bigger instances.

If you know of an instance where there are non-white people who are doing the moderation (and also that the moderation is good) please let me know.

Thank you, comrades! <3

Minecraft tech help question

Minecraft won't launch. I backed up .minecraft and tried reinstalling. The launcher hangs forever at "Cleaning up". No obvious errors in the logs but can paste them up somewhere if anyone thinks that'll help.

KDE neon 5.26, Linux kernel 5.15.0-52
#minecraft 🐘

Does anybody have like, an actual LIST of known-good instances with decent moderation and not of full of chuds (nazis/terfs/swerfs/etc.), that are accepting new users?

(For sharing with users who are currently stock on mastodon dot social or w/e)

boosts appreciated, also if there's a hashtag that obviously goes with this kind of question let me know

@jerry@infosec.exchange Oddly fitting that the edit history on this post shows "-1 edits"

@trainingmontage@hachyderm.io I don't know about COVID specifically, but there is @disability as a posting group

Blackface, police, intimidation of protesters

@doorbraak

In the toot above 👆 I'm replying to is a link to youtube video of a violent group in blackface that are targeting antiracism protesters in the netherlands on their way to protest blackface. Video is a collection from various sources about what happened.

The police stood by and didn't intervene to 'avoid escalation'

The netherlands is a racist cesspool

I wish I had the option to require a message along with a follow request. Kind of how when you sign up for a server, sometimes you have to give a reason for why you wanna sign up. I wanna do the same thing with all the anonymous newbies trying to follow me

@stevelord The unfortunate thing about corporations is that, unlike your typical nazis and the like, they tend to do a lot of damage subtly and *without* loud explosions to notify people of it :/

This story with Tracy Chou, an engineer who specifically works on creating tools to stifle organised harassment online, getting posts removed from mastodon.social because of "reverse sexism/racism," is maddeningly infuriating.

We know that Mastodon's flagship instances have been having issues with moderation for a while, but this seems to point that the trend has gone from "ineffective absent moderators" to "moderators protecting the feelings of white men," which I think will backfire. It also validates every criticism the fediverse receives for being a bastion of tepid, neoliberal, unexamined racism-as-reflex whiteness.

To echo Tracy Chou's bannable offense: I also heavily recommend reading more books by non men, by non white people, and by non cisheterosexual people. What a violent ideology! Tabarnouche. :blobcatreeeeeee:

If I could have a minor superpower, I'd want to walk into a room and *whoosh* put everything back where it belongs. Then I'd head straight for the British Museum

A long time ago, I wrote a site called ConRoomies. It has proven to be pretty popular for furries finding roommates for cons.

Unfortunately, it was built in the height of the Web 2.0 login craze, and its only way of authenticating is with a Login with Twitter button. Oooops.

Well, it has given me the opportunity to do some much needed engineering work that really should have been done years ago anyway.

Just another reminder about putting all your tech eggs in one basket.

re: Openning a big instance

@Kye@tech.lgbt @ajroach42 I mean, *some* conflict is unavoidable in any setting, of course, that's what moderators are for. But those kind of conflicts can be de-escalated and resolved because they are not *fundamental* disagreements.

re: Openning a big instance

@ajroach42 Because people are looking for community, people who they feel safe with and who they feel understand their life and experiences.

re: Openning a big instance

@ajroach42 Yes, but that's not the problem I'm alluding to - the problem I'm talking about is much more fundamental.

Put 50k people with nothing in common in a room, and you *will* have fights break out. What makes moderation and selective federation work on fedi is that each instance is themed around something that people have in common, that people can reliably find agreement on.

This is why basically every "general" instance turns into a moderation nightmare of some sort; you very quickly run into irreconcilable differences, and eventually you will get fediblocked for the worst of your instance population.

@crowgirl@hachyderm.io I've elaborated a bit more here: social.pixie.town/@joepie91/10

(I probably should've attached to the thread here instead, oops)
